Michelin LTX M/S 2 - Initial Thoughts (Now LTX Defender)

Any thoughts on "LT" vs "P" version of these tires?

I run the LT. Load range E even.

Lots of people will tell you that P is fine for the tacoma and that the LT is too heavy and will ride harsh and bla bla bla

I run mine at 45 psi. I get great gas mileage. Truck rides like a dream.

 

I run the P version, ran LT on a previous truck.

Pros for the P rated- a little better gas mileage, a little better ride.

Pros for the LT - better under loads, maybe safer off road.

 

LT's - Definitely safer - much more resistant to flats and blow-outs. Look here.




The screw went straight in then stopped and wouldn't penetrate so the last bit kinked sideways. That's why it came out in 2 pieces. That's a strong tire carcass.

 

Michelins are wicked stronk

Over the years I have popped an LTX that an internal patch or plug fixed fine (nails, screws...shit happens)

all they ever did was slow leak and I either checked pressure and discovered it was low
or saw the nail head on my daily walk around....


anyhow, One time I decided to yank nail and fix with a plug...goddamn! that nail hole was hard as F**K to ream
out so I could plug it. the damn tire was ultra-tough...but I did get it reamed and stuck in some plug cord. tire
has been fine ever since...

 

The LTX MS2 is the best tire you can buy bar none. I don't do much off roading. It's just something about dropping a $35K truck in a mud hole that's disconcerning to me. I have put 100K miles on them with three different vehicles and had 0 problems with them. Your tire problems are over with when you buy Michelin tires. I run michelin defenders on my wifes corolla(90K warranty). I am going to take my 2000 mile rugged trails off this week and put ms 2's on. Life is too short to be riding on BF Goodrich tires.

 

Actually... had some defenders on the wife's Sienna. They sucked. Bad. Don't know if we got a bad set or what but they had no traction in wet, snow, anything but dry pavement.

Bitched to Discount tire and had them buy them back. We did put some michelin Primacy tires on and, while I haven't really driven it much yet, she says they're doing awesome.

I had some MS/2s on my Ranger for 108k miles and they were still fine when I sold it although they were starting to dry rot a bit from age.

Running the AT/2s on the tacoma now and 40k miles in, I like them just as well. Not cheap tires to buy, but accounting for mileage the cheapest tire out there to own.

 

We have had the complete opposite experience with the defenders but it doesn't snow in Florida. They have been great so far. Very quiet and good handling.

 

Glad to hear of these positive reviews as I had just ordered them just before running across this thread.

Just came back from a 10 hour round trip with mine. I love them! My 09 DC TRD OR literally rides like a Cadillac! I mean they don't look as cool/aggressive as Trail Grapplers, but they're a great all around tire for any pavement, mud, dirt, or gravel you could imagine. Well worth the money.

 

im running ms2's and they're the best tire I've ever had on a Tacoma. What pressure are you guys running?

 

I have had many sets of them and currently use them as my street tires on my Taco. As stated above, they are the best tires you can buy, best traction, best ride, best fuel mileage,,,did I forget anything ???oh yeah, longest lasting, best reliability.
Seriously, Michelin is what I run on all of my vehicles.
P.S. I have another set of off-road tires.

 

I'm not sure what my pressure is. Haven't checked it since install.

 

I'm sure mine are set at factory from my 5k mile service just a month ago. nice ride, but I'm curious to see what they feel like a little stiffer. i don't want uneven wear, but I wouldn't mind it if it weren't quite so soft. prob gonna do the chaulk test and see if I can add a coupla pounds.

 

Update:
I'm running my 245-75-16 MS2's at 35 front, 36 rear. It's what the dealer put them at when they put the tires on my truck. Seems to be ok. Felt a little soft to me and I wanted to bump them up a little, but when I discovered today that I was already at 35/36, I'm gonna stay where I'm at.

 

So I finally got a new digital tire pressure gauge. After driving to work the other day I checked all four tires.

Rear two both showed 39psi. The front driver side always looked lower than the front passenger. Turns out they were nearly 4lbs apart!! Straight from the dealer like that. Driver side was 37psi and the passenger was 40.5psi.

These were obviously not cold measurements. But I backed the pressure off the passenger front tire to match the driver side. Unbelievable the dealer got the front two so far apart from one another.
