    We haven't noticed the abuse of SPOT/PLBs but the use of cellphones by folks unprepared is high. Often they get one call out, then when we try to communicate back to them, their phone is dead, sometimes because they've been calling their friends in the meantime, who also end up calling us with conflicting information.
    We tend to use Text to communicate with subjects to preserve battery power. Some of the folks, imo, are just clueless. Their situations are hardly urgent if they would just think before they went out, but they make really stupid decisions, and then can't think their way out of what is a simple problem. example - guy takes his girlfriend out on backroads in a Subaru WRX on backroads, no doubt having watched many a rally car race. Takes the car up into 4x4/ATV trails, with no clue where he's going, and gets the car stuck in snow. Hmm no shovel, but geez, you've got floor mats, your feet, a jack, lots of brush/sticks around, but that would be work! Calls 911 for help, but can't for the life of him describe where he is. Cellphone ping gave crappy GPS data that put him 25km away. We take the police provided data and head out to the 25km point. This makes no sense as the side roads off the main FSR are all snowed in, and gee there is no cellphone coverage out here. We get the police to ping his phone again, as we head back towards town into cellphone range. same gps result. We interrogate him by text, and find out he can see the lights of town, and he knows it is across the lake from him. He also describes the turn off he took. :facepalm: Why the fuck did you not provide that relevant info when you called for help and they asked you? Found him in 20 minutes, dragged his ass (and his car) out through the snow. Girlfriend was not impressed with him.

    I wouldn't know. If I had that kind of money I'd buy a little land up against the mountains in Southern Alberta, far enough away from Calgary that the price isn't crazy, and build a 1500 square foot loaded up home for close to the same amount of money.

    Swank neighbors are still just neighbors.

    Meh, I guess I figure if you have enough money to afford to buy a 1.3 million dollar home you can pretty much choose where you want to live. I know that's not exactly true, just my head thinking about how nice it must be to have a 1.3 million dollar mortgage, or buying that in cash, and thinking it's no big deal.

    You don't need 1.3 million dollars to go burn down your neighbours houses :devil:

    I thought Alberta was cheaper... they are at 11%, we are going to about that in the next couple of years but with no PST.

    I guess if the NDP come in we could see our taxes skyrocket, but the same thing could happen to BC.

    Depends how much you make. The upper end (>175k) is less in AB. For the ~100k BC is cheaper

    True, PST is not an income tax, but at the end of the year it makes a big difference.

    BTW The point I'm trying to get at is I've never heard someone silly enough to say "I'm moving to BC to save some money on income tax." At the end of the day even your increased gas prices are probably going to cover up the few percentage points of difference in taxes. Add on PST, high rent/mortgage, etc and let's just say no body moves to BC to save money.

    I get it, BC has good weather and is beautiful. I'd love to live by the mountains. If I had a choice of places to live though on a few million dollars BC would not be high on my list though. Too expensive.
