Thanks Krisx for the helpful writeup. Any updates on the UCON-ems?

I've been wanting to install one for several years in my 09 XR so now I know how. Attached is your wiring chart but in a pin/pin format (I've not yet checked for typos). I'll send you the xls if you want it.

Wiring chart has now been verified (by krisxone) and updated. This is the latest version here below.

Thanks for cleaning that up! I'll have my truck back this Monday or Tuesday, and I can verify that wiring for you.

Not sure what you mean about splicing pre-09 connectors. The UCON goes inline between the harness connectors and the ECU. It expects pre-09 connectors on both ends. If you wanted to keep your post 09 ECU, you'd have to splice pre-09 connectors to plug in to the UCON, then another adapter from the UCON to the post-09 ECU, so you're doing twice the work. Which is why i went with the pre-09 ECU route.

Yes, this is what I was wondering. It's more difficult work as it would be done in the truck. But less parts. The only parts needed would be pre09 computer with connectors. One could cutoff their post09 plugs (ha, no going back) and solder them to the pre09 computer socket then splice on the pre09 plugs where the wires were cut.

Yup, theoretically, that should be possible. You wouldn't even need the computer if you don't mind modding the UCON and can manage to replace the connectors on the UCON directly with the post-09 connectors you cut off from the harness.

Yes, I do think it's possible to mod the UCON to connect to the post-09 ECU. You would still have to either splice in the Pre-09 connectors to your wiring harness in the truck, or mod the input side of the UCON as well. Lots of ways to skin the cat. Going the harness route is probably not the cheapest or easiest, but it's easily reversible.

Update: I was able to swap the APR-X1 with the UCON EMS with no issues. The truck runs perfect. I updated the original post with the details. Now get to it! I promise you won't regret it.

Krisxone, Do you recommend keeping the wires short (speaking of the connector adapter) or is there some advantage to giving it a bit more play?

The space where the ECU is installed is a bit tight. Keeping it short keeps the adapter small. However, it also make it tough to solder the connections. And too short makes the harness more inflexible. Each wire by itself is soft, but 100+ wires makes the harness as a whole surprisingly inflexible. If I were to do it again, I'd probably go maybe 2 inches longer, I think it would've helped with the APR install. But it's a moot point with the UCON, the way it mounts gives a lot more room. If you do go longer you can always compress/scrunch up the wires. I think the best thing to do would be to dry fit the UCON and the connectors to see how much room you're working with.

Also, keep in mind that some pins on one side of the connector can go all the way across to a connector on the other side, thus needing a longer wire. Hope that makes sense.

i want to do something like this so bad. The rewiring of the ucon sounds like the route for me and probably a bunch of others. Its just so hard to think of how to start and keep it cheapish. Also thats a big chunk if money to spend for R&D for personal use. Anything we can all work togeather on as a group. Research, wiring, time, money, you know that stuff? Tor, you seem to have a bottomeless wallet, get to it! Lol.

Ha! If I was of the non plug-n-play years, I would have just like krisxone. Thus again, major props to him.

I don't sit well with the notion of "someone" saying to me, "it isn't possible." At worst, I'd have made plugs in the harness, and run a stand-alone into that. UCON is much easier to deal with over all, than a stand-alone though. There are options though. Desire being the motivating factor.

Great write-up! I too plan on running a URD supercharger kit someday in my 09 tacoma. One question, how long did it take you to install the supercharger kit itself? I already have the cam gears and thermostat installed...major PITA to change out the cam gears, but at least I got it out of the way with now. My plan is to just go the cut and splice method with a piggy back ecu (probably MAP ECU 3). I really didn't want to go that route, but there are really not that many connections to make. If difficulty is the only concern (which mine is), the adapter harness sounds like alot more work than just hard wiring into the stock harness. Plus, I've already tampered with the wires when I installed an MAF cal previously. Anyways, great work.

hey Krisxone, can you give us your opinion the Rotrex? How's everyday driveability & MPG when driven conservatively? Reasons I'm asking is that I'm looking for more power in the mountains and for towing but some say the TRD supercharger was not that big of an improvement. Thanks in advance.

Good stuff for sure! I had contacted Unichip for a blank harness. They are able to build them for later year models. I believe they made their own molds for the connectors. Price was $275 for a blank/extension harness. The rep told me the model no. for the blank is ppTOY27.1. It's not listed on their website, but you can contact them to order one. That number was for a 2012, so it might be different for the 2010-2011 w/o the air injection.

I was considering asking them to build me two. One with a 2008 male to 2014 female and one 2008 female to 2014 male. This should allow a plug and play install for the UCON. However, the cost is rather prohibitive for me right now.

Wonder why I never heard of or thought of calling them to do just that, until now. That just might be the ticket to getting it done even easier....

Assuming one were willing to soend the coin on getting these harnesses made. $550??? . Where could you buy a UCON to use with it? I havent seen them listed for in stock and sale on URDs site for a very very long time.
