From the audio in the video it sounds like the NHL didn't like the 4 strides he took (you can take 3 before it's charging) or the head contact. IMHO he left his feet after contact, which isn't charging.

 

Just watched Quintal's video. It shows the leaping pretty clearly it appears to me. Kucherov is bent forward in stride low and Kronwall contacts him high. Kronwall initiates the hit too early and is way to high by the time he contacts him. That is a tough hit to make as a big guy when a player is in a such a deep posture.

Tough luck for Kronwall.

 

When it gets slowed down I thought it was pretty evident he had no intention of trying to stay low and make a solid hit to the body. He had plenty of time to line up the hit and still went too high.

In comparison to some other stuff that's go a unpunished this playoffs so far(like Subbans two handed axe) it wasn't that bad though. I bet if there had been a major penalty or something during the game they might have let it slide.

 

Hockey isn't played in slow motion. While we can certainly review a play that way and get a precise image of the actual physical contact and the movement leading up to it, I fail to comprehend how someone's intent becomes clearer in slow motion.

Because you can see him continue his motion up high and see him pick his foot up before the hit which are much more difficult to see in real speed. I guess saying his intent becomes more clear might not have been the best way to put it, but what I meant was that after watching the slowed down replay its more clear that he made no effort to make a hit to the body and it was instead directed upwards. Whether or not he was intentionally targeting the head is a different discussion.

Point is, it was a high hit and the slowed down video helps see that. Thats really what I was trying to get at haha

 

The funny thing is that if you focus on the head contact and high hit you'd think the NHL video would talk more about Elbowing. Instead the video seems focused on his strides and "intent" using the term charging multiple times.

 

I wouldn't call it a charge either.

Quintal himself refers to Kronwall's action as pinching in. A pinch in this instance is necessarily a move forward, a classic challenge by a defenseman at the offensive blue line. In this case Kronwall plays the man and not the puck, but I personally don't see it as a charge.

I too would be more inclined to call it head contact or elbowing if the forearm is what the hitter leads with.

Anyway, it is an interesting call. As a fan, I would prefer to see game 7 with Kronwall in it. Not because I am a Wings fan, but because he is an important player, and it is always interesting to see if a player is made to answer for their actions.

 

Yeah idk maybe since it was more his forearm than elbow? I'm not sure what necessarily constitutes elbowing

 

I think it was a high hit, but idk if it was really worth a game suspension. I'd rather let the players on the ice decide if he needs to pay up.
