Why is this a hot topic on the 4runner forums but not here? Don't the tacos and runner share the same radiator/trans cooler?

Had to deal with this on a 4runner last year. What a state...

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
Because the transmission coolers on Tacomas are external instead of internal.

Not necessarily. I have on 04 DCab with an auto tranny. The cooler is in the radiator. I had to add an external cooler, granted I am running it in series with the internal cooler.

Mine's external, somebody must've changed it before I got it.

Mines external. PO might have done it but it looks pretty factory.

I know this can be done. They will put in a radiator for a Taco with a manual Tranny. I know that some of the 4runner guys do this, as the radiator is not as tall and doesn't hang down as far. I think there is a post in the 1st gen market place for a guy that builds stainless skid plates, but they only fit tacos with manual trannys due to the height difference. He has not yet made an auto tranny version.

The stock cooler can be bypassed easily by simply disconnecting the hoses to the rad and running them to an external cooler. No need to change rads.
    Thats how mine is too.

You are correct. The guys that switch them are doing so for additional clearance.

My trans lines run to the radiator. It seems this is only a problem on the 3rd gen runners. I'm just curious why it's an issue with them and not us with an internal trans cooler.

    They are killer.

Place is probably 40 miles each way for me, in lousy traffic. But a few times a year I am in the area, and always stop for a few bags of produce and a shake. Tell the wife it's 'fruit, dairy and veggies, I'm so good'.
