    You answered your own question. You'd need a separate power wire that what's coming from the switch. Power runs to the switch then separate wire to box. Not from box to switch. Easier way to go about what you want might be a fan with a remote that can control light/fan separately.

    ^^this. The one I put in had 3 speeds and would always start up with the last speed set by the pull cord. Light would always reset and come on by flipping the wall switch. It was never a big problem though
