-Astoria Oregon is nice (Goonies) - west of Portland and a tad north on the coast
-Southern Coast of Oregon has a small zoo where you can pet baby lions/tigers depending on what cubs they have, can't remember the name. Also, a dinosaur walk at random pull off of 101, life size din's, not so life like look. Also, lots of places to stop and chill and bike along the coast between Oregon and San Fran.
-Avenue of the Giants for huge red woods, can see better ones if you go in to Sequoia National Park, but this road is right off the 101 highway and an easy drive.
-Sonoma-if your a wine guy or the Mrs.'s is, too many options
-The usual San Fran stuff, if you plan on Alcatraz call and make a reservation
-If your a golf fan, 17 mile drive in Monterey, solid courses and a nice bike ride as well
-Hearst Castle, San Simeon, just north of San Luis Obispo, place is epic
-Pismo- for all your dirt bike/off-roading needs
-moonstone beach-could be a nice place to stop, quiet and simple
-Moro bay- also a decent spot, can feed sea lions
-Santa barbara- decent beach city, can be pretty packed during the summer.
-then you hit LA/OC, pm me if you need advice around there, 11year old may love the La brea tar pits exhibit.

If you stop to see the redwoods on the northern California coast, near the town of Trinidad is Patricks Point State park. Great place to stay. Also Humboldt Redwoods State Park has a large grove of giant trees that is definetly worth seeing.

Take Hwy 12 from Missoula to Lewiston thru Idaho. Lots of places to camp and the road is awesome. Follows the Clearwater River most of the way.

Patrick's Point and Humboldt Redwoods State park both have campgrounds. You might want to book the dates you want through ReserveAmerica to ensure you get a spot.
