Tire upgrade to boost height w/o body lift

I love my 01 Tacoma but it's a 2WD and I hate sitting on the ground. Someone suggested a body lift, but I don't see the point since it is a 2WD. I was thinking about upgrading my tires for a little added height and since a nice set of tires would beef up my low little Tacoma in general.

I am looking for as much info as possible at this point so that I can make an informed decision in about 4-6 months from What are some good starter tires that will give a little boost?

I currently have stock tires. I'm not sure of the size off hand as my truck is 8000 miles away in FL and I am in Iraq. I'll work on getting that info to you guys.

If it is a Prerunner then it should have come stock with around 265 70 16. You can put a 265 75 16 which gives you about an inch more in the tires height. I’m pretty sure that’s the biggest you can run without having to lift your truck to prevent rubbing. If it is the 2-wheel drive model that sits on the ground then I have no clue!

It is not a pre-runner, it is missing everything I want in a Tacoma, but I have faith.

 

I'm running a 1.5"" Daystar coil spacer lift and tire size 225/75R15

 

Here is my prerunner, exactly like yours, 2wd and everything, just an '03 model(I am unsure if your's is a 5-lug or 6-lug. I have a 3" Tuff Country AAL kit to the rear leaf springs with new adjustable shocks, and just a 2" Tuff Country leveling kit to the front. I have been told that I could fit 33" tires but I think I'll be more in the clear when I upgrade to 285's. here is a pic of how high it is sitting to give you a more clear idea of the rear suspension-and remember this a 2wd.

 

You can only fir a slightly larger tire before they Rub. Your not going to get much out of it, do a lift. Look for Spindles if you can.

Just because its 2wd doesnt mean you can lift and offroad it! I have 9" of lift and 32"'s on my 5 lug 2wd. Doing the Deaver pack this week. It will go just about everywhere I need it to. Its all about the Locker.....

 

I keep reading about this "locker" deal. What is that all about? Is it just in reference to the after market tool lockers some have put on the back of their Tacomas? I'm guessing that's what you're talking about, but what benefits are making it such a big deal?

 

Locker is for the differential. It locks both wheels so that one is never allowed to spin slower than the other. HUGE help in offroading 2wd trucks (and 4wd for that matter).

On a Full time Locker it will unlock in turns so that the outside wheel can spin faster and you wont eat up the tires.
