MPG Estimates for 2016?

Yes, but I got 21mpg @ 65-70mph over 1,000 hilly miles pulling my 2012 Tacoma to new owner in my 1/2 ton Ram diesel.

There is a sweet spot with these trucks and yes it depends on use. I bet you'd do significantly worse in your Tundra pulling that same travel trailer, with same passengers, crap in bed, etc. over the exact same course.

I have a bud who has an EcoDiesel...biggest POS he has ever owned.

 

Do you know why? Cheap interior? Mechanical issues? Performance?

 

He has it only 10K miles on it has been in the shop for 3 weeks for various things, (he didn't elaborate too much) build quality is lacking, the last time, it sprung a leak in the roof (guessing the 3rd brake light gasket was faulty)...they have been getting a ton of rain where he is. Ruined the whole interior...they did replace it though.

He did like the mileage it was getting, feels the whole truck is poor quality, though. Believe he is looking at Fords now.

 

Please someone justify what you say. I continue to read over and over about how some people think Diesel is just hands down a better engine that Toyota should have implemented. It all comes from folks that have owned a diesel truck for years, etc. First of all, Diesel is generally more expensive over the last few years... and any increase in mileage is totally gone. There was a small thread of time that diesel was cheaper and thus the better mileage made them a more economical vehicle. but guess what... the petroleum industry figured that out many years ago now and they will see to it that diesel is never again a good deal. so having said that.... do any of you diesel fans realize these things. Diesel stinks to the high heaven... every time one of your trucks drives by I have to almost hold my nose. Guess what, when you drive by people they choke! Secondly, diesel engines are beyond obnoxiously loud. Again, every time one of you drives by I have to check my hearing as your disgustingly loud... easilly 3 times more noise than a gas vehicle. Given those two features about diesel, I would pay 10% more any day (although those days are gone) to not stink up the entire neighborhood and wake up all the kids everytime I drive by. Get this... everyone else HATES diesel... you stink and your are WAY too loud. And anymore you will pay the same per mile at the end of the day for the year if not more. Wake up. diesel is a fraud. Now hopefully technology can eventually evolve and engineers can make the diesel engine quieter and perhaps not stick. but at this point, if you drive a diesel truck you stink and your beyond loud and everyone cringes when you drive by.

 

This is why we can't have diesels because people complain there too "loud" and they "smell". Who gives a crap when I can get 30+ mpg on the highway. And in places Diesel really isn't that much more. I figured it up at one point when diesel was like 40 cents more, and came up with you would have to get 7+ more mpg then the same vehicle in gas for it to be cheaper than running gas. And that's possible. And yes I know you have to pay more for the diesel engine and whatever else but they are also built stronger and are more durable.

 

They are not stronger or more durable than modern gassers. They have high pressure fuel systems and turbos. Then they get the added fun of post combustion scrubbing systems required to meet US emissions that have shown to be problematic. Gas engines are getting more like diesels with high compression, turbos, and direct injection.

For anyone that isn't driving 25k+ miles a year, 30mpg highway costs barely anything more than 26mpg highway (which is what I think the new V6 Tacoma will get). The difference in fuel is 77gallons over a year and 15k miles. That is less than $250/year. And if you are racking up those miles, why not really save money and drive some that gets 40mpg on regular unleaded? Corolla, Civic, Cruze etc will be way cheaper up front and cheaper to operate. Keep an old beater truck for off roading or weekend projects.

The other problem with the diesel trucks that return that sort of fuel economy is that they are dog slow. Like Prius slow. The Ram Diesel 1500 takes 9.5 seconds to 60. That is just a second quicker than a Prius (both measured by consumer reports).

 

Do some more research. Go drive a new Ram, Ford, and GM diesel in the morning and see how it really runs. They purr like kittens when cold. Guy right next to my work has a 2014 Ram diesel and I bet my 2000 civic is nearly as loud at idle. Also, not everyone that drives a diesel truck is modding it and spewing smoke. There are responsible and sane people who drive them too. Actually, most people who drive them are responsible and sane and just pulling travel trailers to go camping and such.

I've already posted up gas price stats here before and diesel is not much more expensive than gas especially when compared to premium gas. Of course there are those people who are ignorant and just say "not in my area, diesel is $1.00 more and has been for years". As a matter of fact, diesel is now cheaper than regular in Seattle area.

Ok, I get it, you hate diesels. But they're getting better and make for a better engine in a small truck. You wouldn't be interested in one ok thats fine, but count me as one of many who would be.

 

Not everywhere. But I do know that for April 2015 average price of gas in California was 3.26 (all grades) and diesel was 3.10

 

Trying to calculate future fuel costs is nearly impossible, since they fluctuate so much....all we can do is take a wild guess. Believe at the end of the day, vehicle cost of ownership between diesel and gas is splitting hairs. Shoot, 5 months ago 91 octane was 10¢ cheaper than diesel here, now it is 10¢ more...who in the hell knows what is going to be in 5-10 years...and how much it will vary in that time.

So you buy a vehicle that fills the task at need. Some guys need diesels others need gassers....some need both.

And really...a new vehicle is probably one of the worst investments you can make...you're gonna loose money any way you slice it.

 

Saw an article today comparing the 1986 Tacoma vs. the 2016. In the article it has 22/27 estimate listed. Not sure how they got that but sounds good to me so far.

There is zero credibility on that link. They also wrote that you cant get a standard with the 4cyl.

 

Agree many things wrong with that article but, I think it true you cannot get a 6spd manual with 2.7L. Don't know about 5spd.

 

Good God. The engineers at Toyota are probably pushing to release the specs because reading these forums will no doubt make them want to vomit.
