No "need" for 2nd Battery anymore?

I just picked one of these up this week:



I bought it because my work Dodge doesn't like it's battery very much and tends to die over a few days. I've had it in the shop several times, and usually they blame my power inverter even though it doesn't draw power unless the truck is running. Anyways I was already looking into installing a second battery on the Ram, and my Tacoma since it has a winch and some lights, to avoid the annoyance of dead batteries.

I've been really impressed with this setup. I've seen the lead acid battery boxes in the past but never bought one because the high output ones are freaking huge and lose charge relatively fast. This LiPo based booster is supposed to hold charge for several months, doesn't care when it gets to cold, and can actually fit easily in any one of the storage area's I have in both trucks. This thing has boosted my Hemi Ram no problem and can run my laptop when I don't want to use the inverter or the truck is off. I'm sure some people have seen these LiPo based setups floating around but I thought I'd chirp up and show this one off. It really is a sweet piece of tech that's less than the size of a small binder in the back of my truck, ready for whenever I need it.

 

Isn't a 2nd battery to run accessories ?

 

That's why I put need in quotes. There's still lots of reasons to have a second battery. These things are for people like me who aren't pushing our battery over it's limits right now but do have a need for a backup starting power source.

Is it a LiPo based pack? Yeah I used to be into 1/10th short course RC trucks at one point a few years ago. LiPo is great and in general holds up better than most batteries when it's not being physically beat to death. The only thing that sucks with LiPo is if you mess up the battery due to over or under charging it's FUBAR'd.

I can't wait for LiPo capacitor hybrid batteries to come out from major manufactures. Then maybe I'd put one in my car as the 2nd battery. Till then this little unit should serve my needs, and the needs of most people on here, very well.

 

I've been eyeing these for awhile. In my application my truck is stored until camping trips. The SLA setups are huge as you say and don't hold charge. These LiPo packs are small enough I could take them with me and charge before a trip at home. I don't run much of anything off of my battery in camp, but having a backup jump source in the event of an accidental slow discharge of the main battery is very desirable given how remote some sites are.

So far seeing good reviews of these. Thanks for posting about yours, I'm getting more certain I'll be picking one up myself soon.

 

I have the same jumper you have. I've never needed it but I've jumped a lot of other people with it.

 

Damn, not compatible with 16v Apple laptops. Still looks nice though and it's the right size.
