255/85 R16 Owners Experience

Nice. I was worried about keeping my 5100 at. 85 with eibachs but taking the lean spacers out lol I'm sure I will be fine the.

 

I've been running maxxis bighorn 255/85r16s for a few months and am very happy with this size. They fit my stock '15 TRD OR and just had to trim the front mud flaps. I also ran this tire in a 265/75r16 and the tall skinnies are much better- improved mpg and snow/ice performance. While still not great in the snow, the skinnier maxxis works noticeably better than the wider size.

My truck is a 6 speed and the gearing feels fine, even in Colorado's front range. Sure, you can feel a power loss but it still gets up the mountains just fine. It will cruise 65-75 just fine in 6th gear on the highway, just not on huge climbs. It's no problem to downshift to 5th a little more often. Results with an auto tranny might vary.

 

Bullshit, no problem here, 17 mpg or so and will accelerate in 6th if needed, and that's with shitty e10 gasoline. The taller tire will drop your rpms though, but I have no idea how much vs the 245 car tires that are so called standard size. And I'm running 255 toyo mt.

did you thing rub with mud flap on 2008 with 5100 @2.5" + 1/4" top plate spacer on dick cepek wheel 16X8 back spacing 4" offset -12mm

Gotcha, seems like that is par for the course for those things. Just piecing a set together. I prefer the look, though. Especially with the pizza cutters. I know there is some dealer I've seen posted around here that sells the FJ wheels, but I believe they are 17", no thanks.

 

It's only about a $30-40 premium per tire for a 17" wheel.

Depends on the look you are after. Steelies have the military vibe and you are not going to break a steelie like an alloy can break if you really beat on your truck. I would think it would be nice to be different than all the guys running black alloy wheels or OEM alloys wheels. I run first gen alloys off a 2002 Tacoma on my Second gen because they have the right offset for these 255/85R16's. I got them used at a real nice price, but the look is growing on me.

Found a set of 4 on Craigslist for 200 bucks. Thoughts on the deal? Thinking about contacting the person and seeing if they will just trade my alloys for them. But they may not even have a need for them. My goal is 255/85/16. I've read numerous times that those wheels are great for that size.

I just honesty don't like the look of the 2nd gen wheels. Even plastidipped or properly painted flat black. And I hate the bro aftermarket wheel look. I'm either just sticking with stock, steelies, or I may get these 1st gen wheels.

Mounted my Toyo's to a set of Konig countersteer X 16x8 in charcoal grey. looks awesome!

 

Real drawback is the weight. 16" steelies are already quite heavy, ~30 lb per wheel. 17" steelies would be even heavier. Compare this against Konig Countersteer 16" at 18 lb per wheel (or Volk TE37s at 16 lb...)
