Towing with a 4 cylinder. What do you tow?

In my 2000 Taco with the 4 banger I used to pull a 1956 Chris Craft cabin cruiser and a 6x10 enclosed trailer filled with dive gear.

 

took the boat to the lake this weekend and was very impressed, couldn't even really tell it was back there.

 

Pulled a load of scrap metal(300#) to the scrapper GCVWR fully loaded was 6800lbs and I will never due that again even when unloaded going home could not due 65 on the interstate and had a hell of the time fully loaded even hitting 55. Other than that the truck rode great was nice and even did not wiggle around and with the tacoma the trailer was easier to move around.

 

So what you all are saying is my popup camper at 2800# loaded should be able to be pulled by my '14 fairly easily. Should I get a WD hitch for her

 

Rule of thumb is whenever what you are towing exceeds 50% of your GVWR, then you should use a WD setup. Your GVWR is ~5300lbs, so according to that, yes you should.

I just pulled a 5x8 Uhual (uhual says it weighs 900 lbs) from Delaware to Florida. The truck with the trailer and two people weighed 5060, fully loaded with two people 6440. So I was towing 2,280 lbs with ease. I had no problem keeping up with traffic at about 65-75 MpH in 4th and 5th. I filled up with premium the whole way and my mileage was about 18 mpg.

 

I towed a 35 foot travel trailer 60 miles. I went to buy it and after I paid for it the guy said when are you coming back to get it. I said I am taking with my 4 cylinder Tacoma he just said ya right. I backed up to it and he lowered the toug of the trailer and he said it won't crank down any more. So I just hit my rear air bag switch and it lifted it right up. He was amazed. Went about 45 mph home with no problems. Git to love air bags.

 

It was my 2011 Tacoma work truck. got to love Tacoma's I have 2011 and 2016 they amaz me.

 

The Pre Runner seems like the best option for the 4 bangers higher stance and no need to worry about airbags

 

You inspired me to go pick up this 16' toy hauler, so thank you! I got a weight distribution hitch and brake controller and it pulled it ok. Truck didn't care too much for it but it handled it. Kept it in gear till around 3500 rpm and shift to the next and never higher than 4th at 60-65 mph I was around 3k rpm and got 12.5 mpg on the scan guage.

 

What type of fuel were you using? Try premium, I think the mpgs will thank you and so will your wallet. Reloader403

 

I feel pretty dumb now that I think about it.....I had garbage grade gas in that poor truck. I WILL take your advice though. Good call.

 

towed from nd to az 1400 miles and before that made same trip with 07 fusion on tow dolly. 2.7l with five speed

 

I towed 3500 lbs 500miles from Hagerstown md to Louisville ky over mountains, I felt it did okay better then expected. my truck is automatic too but I shift to third for climbs and never lost 55 mph, I wouldn't do it often but once in awhile.

2000-ish pound flatbed trailer w/6000 pounds of paving stones, plus 1300 pounds of limestone screening in the bed.
Hmm, that's a lot. 9300 pounds.
Never went over 50 kph. It wasn't for lack of power (it would easily have pulled that at highway speed since the load was short and somewhat aerodynamic), but bumpy city streets and the fact that I had to load the trailer with very little tongue weight without WD-hitch.

 

That would only help with an engine that adapts its timing based on knock. I think the 4.0 might qualify. The 2.7 does not.

 

Just wanted to bump this. I can't seemed to find an answer. I have a 15 Tacoma access cab 4x4 5spd with add a leafs. Wondering if this truck can pull a car. It's a 1986 supra. Some weight Reduction on car. And I would also carry 2 extra sets of wheels+ gear. For about 200/300km distance debating buying a class 3 hitch

Easily. Those things are only 3000 pounds from factory. Might as well be a bag of feathers.
