Which oil filter wrench?

Another member is having issues finding an oil filter wrench that works on his 2014.. apparently he's used 2 or 3 that were "supposed" to work, and didn't.

Anybody have a good wrench that works, and can suggest? TIA.

this doesn't answer you question. but i took my OEM filter in the auto parts store and bought one that fits it. It's a plain black one that goes on the end of a rachet. I can take a pic when I get home but it's nothing special.

 

That'll work. He's not taken a filter into the store as far as I know, so anything anybody can provide will help him. I suppose taking a filter is a good option though, and seeing what works. He might not have thought about that.

 

why would you need a wrench??

 

Posting for another member, so I'm not sure why. Alas, he wants a wrench. He's also in his 60s, so maybe a wrench is easier for him.

 

Because idiots over tighten oil filters all the time. People also forget to lube the seal which also makes things a SOB.

I also have a black plastic fitting that goes on a wrench and works well. The good old rubber strap wrenches work well but they aren't quite as idiot proof I suppose.

 

well if he's in a pinch and can't get a wrench, he could hammer a screwdriver through the filter and turn it. A little messy but it'll do the job

 

I hand tighten my filters on but have a good strap wrench that I used to get stuck on filters off. Snap-on makes a good strap wrench that'll last forever and you can use it to turn almost anything that is a cylinder shape/round.

 

He mentioned a strap wrench didn't work as there wasn't enough room, IIRC.

 

Hmm, I think the first time I took mine off it was with a rubber strap wrench. The current plastic wrench attachment I have comes from Wal Mart if I remember correctly. I just borrowed a fram filter off the shelf and kept trying attachments till I found the one that fit well. Took it home and it fit both the OEM Toyota filter and the Bosch filters I use perfectly.

Does he have a V6? Because I can fit a big strap wrench around mine.

 

He has a V6 TRD Sport.

 

Well then that would be his best bet and he could use it for other things besides an oil filter in the future.

 

The one I have is just a nylon belt with a metal buckle that you attach your 3/8" ratchet to and go to town.

 

From a parts house or general use tool like from a hardware store?

 

I got it from my neighbor who got it from the Snap-on truck. I think Craftsman makes a similar one.

I take that back. The craftsman one has a handle on it so it might not work where the filter is. I was able to put an extension on mine to give the ratchet free range of motion.

If you google strap wrench, there will be some pictures of the nylon belt with the metal buckle. That's the one.

 

Ok, I'm the guy Peerunner posted for. He did that 'cause I had reached exactly 1000 posts on the day the new TW Forum format started (Omen? ) and I wanted to make my protest count. So much for that shit.

First, to correct the record, of course I took a filter in to multiple stores. Pee, I told you that!
Next, I'm not in my 60's, so take another guess!

Now the reason I broke my silence: I found the cap wrench on Amazon. Just delivered today and it fits perfect. I can't believe none of the auto supply stores carry a 73mm cap wrench... it's not like the Tacoma isn't everywhere you look!
