Howdy all, yesterday I changed the engine oil and filter on my Taco for the first time. The change itself was fairly simple and went without a hitch, except now I've noticed a few potential issues:

    1) There is a faint, metallic, "grinding" sound coming from the engine occasionally. I can actually feel it more than I can hear it.. It seems to happen most when the truck is going forward between 40-55 MPH, I am accelerating, and the RPMs are between 1500 and 2500. The noise does NOT occur when the truck is in NEUTRAL.

    2) Standing outside the vehicle, there is an audible ticking sound while it is idling.

Some details on the oil change that may be pertinent.
    Vehicle: 2014 DCSB V6 4x4 Auto, 35K miles
Oil: Mobile1 5W-30 EP Full synthetic, replacing whatever conventional oil the dealership had used
    Filter: K&N

I am getting no indications on the dash, such as lights, high temp readouts, etc, that would indicate a problem. Beyond the noises it handles normal.

    Any thoughts?

Are you SURE you drained the oil and not the transmission? I hear that's a common mistake on our trucks.

Didn't leave any tool or other items under the hood?

Other than that the noise in your 1500-2500 rpm range, could it be spark knock? There is a TSB for this.

The ticking/knocking could be the normal Tacoma tick.
My 14 ticks (IMO) really bad. Dealer says it normal and I've heard others that sounded the same

Did you leave your "drip cup" under the oil filter housing?.... it can rub against the belt.

**edit, nevermind, it doesn't do the noise in neutral.

Regarding the trans plug instead of oil drain plug, oh yea, more than you think

I triple checked, and read three or four different threads and other sources to make sure. I was paranoid about draining the wrong one. Just to be triple sure, the pic below shows the ENGINE oil pan and drain, correct?

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/a...ansmission-fluid-oilchangeplug006-medium-.jpg

Also, the oil that came out was brown, not red.

As far as the rest of the checklist:

No tools left under the hood, they are all accounted for, as is the Gatorade bottle I used to catch the filter oil (it's still on my garage floor, whoops).

Hope it wasn't the trans plug instead of the oil plug!

Check your engine oil and make sure it's not over filled. If it WAS the tranny that ya drained then the engine would have twice the amount of oil it should since it was never drained empty.

I've heard of the synthetic oil being to thin and in some cases causing engines to make peculiar noises. You may have to change it to a blend. My truck has a blend put in at the dealership for my oil changes. Other variations to the oil would be outside temperatures. Hot weather would cause it to thin out even more and the latter in the colder months.

I'm a victim of the accidentally-draining-the-tranny-instead-of-the-oil mistake on my first time oil change a few years back on my 04. You will realize this when your truck stalls a couple of times and won't get into gear... If it hasn't stalled or if it's not shifting really weird, then I wouldn't think you drained the tranny. Also like others said check the oil level. That's the second clue. If it was the tranny you have to fill it through the long dip tick tube in the engine (I think, 2nd gen may be different). Walmart has super cheap funnels specifically for this if you need it. Good luck

Yeah, the 2nd Gen is different. It's a completely sealed design and no way to adD fluid.

The OP here seems pretty confident that he pulled the right plug. The only other thing I can recommend is taking it back to the dealer and let them deal with it.

    1) Is this with the engine cold or warmed up?

    2) Normal

I had a similar noise to what you are describing in the 2014 I had. It turned out to be the idler pulley.

That was my guess based on that video.

OP, I wish you the best of luck in getting it figured out.
