OK, the 3.5 should be a good engine

I've towed with the Ecoboost at work. It gets better mileage than the 6.2 L loaded or not. Against Fords own Coyote it is a gas guzzler, but there is a lot more power available down low from that Ecoboost and you can really tell when loaded.

If Toyota stuck something like the little Ecoboost in the Tacoma I bet they could get 23 mpg no problem and be well over 300 HP and ft*lbs of torque.

How do you figure that? 1/3 less rotating mass and the same displacement should ALWAYS equal better mileage. Why else would you turbo a diesel?

You are confusing your opinion with facts.

Also, you are forgetting about cost. How does a twin turbo LS2 at $??? fit into this discussion about the 3.5L?

The Ecoboost has 10% more power than the Coyote 5.0 L and a 30% more of it down low around 2500 RPM. I bought a Coyote because my wife doesn't need the fastest truck, just a good truck.

Also comparing a crate engine off Ebay versus one right from the manufacturer isn't apples to apples. I could go pull an engine with less than 5K out of a totalled F150 for $3K, so does that mean the Ecoboost is twice the value for the money? No. You have to go apples to apples. What's a new LS series engine worth from Chevy in a crate? Somewhere around 9-10K last time I checked, which was a long time ago.

The 4.0 doesn't have to be. It is a significantly better performer with dual vvt. The problem is, it will never be that economical. Smaller is in for economy which was the biggest priority, not more grunt. For a mid size truck, equal grunt to the 4.0 and significantly better Eco would be a winner.

Toyota isn't going to put a new untested motor over time into a Tacoma like Ford has. You and I would be the first to complain when it went into the repair shop before 10 years and 150k miles. TheTaco just doesn't warent that much power. It is too light to tow 6400 lbs as it is. It's a life style truck, not a a towing machine. It's amde to tow jet skis and snowmobiles...that's it. 250 hp and 280 ft lbs of torque and excellent reliability is about the expectation.

Yeah, that LS is a missing a lot of things. It's a base motor with nothing on it. That Ford is ready to hook up and run. Sorry I thought you had compared an Ebay seller to Ford Racing, like you said here:

You should of gave links from the get go lol.

That Ecoboost 3.5L has 378lbft of torque at 1700rpm. Pretty impressive low end torque, and perfect for towing. I spend most of my highway time around 2000 rpm.

I think the LS3 has been superseded by the LT1, and both have the 6.2L displacement. So not really easy to do a comparison.
However, with the climbing compression ratios in the LS/LT engines over time, I would imagine that there will be an eventual leap to FI.
I do remember those 8.0L Lincoln Continentals.

I see there is also a 2.3L 4cyl Ecoboost available in the Mustang that makes 310hp/320lbft at 3000rpm on premium fuel.

Toyota needs to stop screwing around and put a 2JZ-GTE into the Tacoma and call it a day haha

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
I think it will be a good engine, I have faith in toyota to get it right. We haven't had a bad truck engine since the 3.blows and II'm pretty sure toyota learned their lesson on that.

If they release a TRD supercharger for the new engine I think I'll end up getting one. Looking back on my 100k mile journey I've been through with the truck it would have been killer to have a bit more power on tap. I won't do it now because I won't get much time on it but if I get a 2016 I'd probably do it as soon as it's available. That and ARB lockers

It won't be a surprise to find out it is dirived from the basic corporate 3.5 found in a bundle of other cars. This motor is not used in the 4 Runner. They use the truck engine. It's a lifestyle vehicle made to tow little boats, jet skis and snow mobiles.....just like car based SUVS. It's Toyotas only response to an economical small truck engine. You know, Ford did the same thing years ago in comng up with an economical motor for their Ranger; they used the Pinto engine. This isn't a new concept. These trucks are not heavy haulers. It will be tough and long lasting....just like the engine in the Venza. ;-)

True. We have one. It has the same 6 cylinder but a slightly larger 2.7 four. Now, the new Tacoma will share a few mechanical parts with it too. There are lots of parts that are common in most Toyota products. The wands and many dash buttons look they were all lifted from the same parts bin. I think when the specs came out for the new Tacoma, it will be hard for Toyota to say it's a truck engine made from the ground up, different then the standard 3.5 you see in nearly every other other "car".
