If your certified, and you have the option to move, there's a lot of mines that are starving for surveyors. You could work for barrick or newmont, and I know there's spots open out in Nevada. Good luck out there, sorry to hear about your job...

You could always pull this off as a last resort. Find another company willing to hire you for what you want and then approach your company CEO. Thoroughly and intelligently, with no ego, explain your position and how you feel your department head is treating you. Tell her that you honestly want to stay with her company and appreciate what they have done for you but unless you see more commitment to from them to you, then you will be forced to find employment elsewhere. Any good manager will see that you're making a fair argument and put a strike against the department head. The department head will likely hate you but if your relationship is already in the toilet then it can't get much worse right?

If it backfires at that point what do you care. You'll have your other job waiting in the wings.

Smarter to find a company who actually wants you, is capable and willing to support and reward your efforts financially and one that doesn't make you campaign for meager requests like hours.

However if he really wants to stay where he is he could always try torpedoing the head of the department. If the CEO really wants him she will make sure the department head is put back in his place.

 

True. But unless he works under the CEO the benefit is minimal. Even if the CEO tosses him a lifeline, he would still has a shitty boss who likely won't ever give him an honest appraisal when it comes to daily treatment, annual reviews for pay and promotion, etc.

It's nice to be revered in the eyes of the top brass, but the day to day dealings with middle management will make a good job suck, and a sucky job be shitty.

 

I don't want to stay if the way they treat me doesn't get better. when he sent me home today he talked at me like I was his 2yr old son. I was calm and explained myself, and told him im not making enough at all. his attitude got worse and I left. If he gets so mad and belittles me over having a basic need, and trying to sell myself to him to meet it angers him, then it is best to leave. He said I don't care go home when I said 21 hours is a really small check.

 

I don't know the employment laws in your state, but here if you work part time, but work 20+ hours/week for 3 weeks in a row, the company is REQUIRED to pay you medical benefits. Could this be why they are limiting your hours?

not in the state of Georgia. It doesn't make sense when in the fall I regularly had 30+ a week and two weeks I managed 40 hours... I just wonder why all of a sudden they are doing this, and based off of reading these posts it is that they want me gone.

 

Don't over think what people on the internet are saying. Yes, a drop in hours often means they want you to leave. Not always. It could be that the shift leader is watching his budget for some odd reason or he just plain old doesn't like you. Whatever it is, you should always keep your door open to new opportunities.

 

we only have one shift, and whatever the reason, im looking. I need more than a maximum of $206 a week.

 

How hard is it making $10 an hour in your area?

In regards to how easy is it to leave them and make $10 elsewhere?

 

for my job its underpaid, and it is easy to find for surveying and engineering CAD.

No he is right. Basically, 25 hours is the cap for part time workers. Fact of the matter is Obamacare crap caused the shift in part-timers to be reduced to 25 or LESS in hours. If more hours are given to part timers then they are mandated by the federal government to provide you with "benefits", of a higher threshold. This will in turn cause your company or ANY company MORE money. They don't want that now do they?

I worked part time for my company year before last and had regularly 35-39 hours while working a daytime position. Luckily I was able to secure a full time position and received a 3 dollar pay raise for what I classify as a "titled position" before Obamacare hit. Part-timers, regardless of position, are usually "untitled".

Our part timers are begging for 25 hours and aren't getting it and they won't. However, permanent part timers are guaranteed 16 hours. Granted when I mean part time these are "permanent part time". Our company also has "seasonal hires" for manning purposes that can get as many as 40 hours a week and even over time, but at the same time are only guaranteed 10 hours. Reason? They do not actually belong to the company and can be "let go" (fired) at any time, without notice. Once again, a bonus of being a permanent employee, you have to be "legally" fired.

Now, down to my little $.02 for yourself.
1. I don't know how you work, but you do apparently show up to work. Thats hard to find honestly.

2. You've adamantly stated you work very hard, thats great, work even harder than that.

3. Your hourly rate is 10 bucks an hour, and that sucks, but is IS above minimum wage, so you've got that going for you. (My point is, it can alway be worse).

4. Being on the bottom is the best view, it gives the greatest chance to grow into an even BETTER employee. (you'll appreciate when you rise up a LOT more, wherever that may be).

5. That good ole boy program is flat out crap. Believing in it, will make you no better a person/employee if you indulge in it. We spend more time at work, some of us, than we do at home. So their "work family" views you as an outsider, and rightly so. See #4.

6. Last, but certainly not least, my father taught me a valuable lesson and is the HARDEST for me to this very moment typing this. Stay humble! Being humble allows you to see the whole picture, whatever picture that may be. The sooner you or I start saying we are "better" then what we have, take look at the gentleman living on the street....he's got nothing.

And i'll leave one quote that I look at everyday "The harder you work, the luckier you get".

Have you considered joining the military? The pay may not be great, but you get 3 hots and a cot as well as benefits.

No way I'd bother fighting for hours with a company only paying $10 an hour. There's plenty of other jobs out there that will pay you that and give you 40 hours, I don't care where you live. You just have to be willing to do the work.
