What is a heat exchange? If it's rusted, does that mean it's pretty much done?

 

Heat exchange is like a radiator. Same concept. We call it a condenser.

How bad is the rust?

 

I've seen heat exchangers with surface rust and still work fine with no leak issues. If it's an old unit, I wouldn't be surprised to see surface rust. Condensation can develope for many reasons in the exchanger. Make sure there's no cracks or metal flaking off cuz carbon monoxide could leak.

 

Seems fine to me but

 

X2, doesn't look very rusty.. Could he maybe wire wheel/sand down the rust and then paint it if he wanted? Or would that put a bunch of fumes in the house or something?

I'll leave that answer for someone more qualified. HVAC isn't my gig and household HVAC I have little experience with.

 

Update, the missing man and both children have been found safely on the TNF. No word on the Tacoma though

Highway 4 is closed before Lake Alpine. Can't get to Slick Rock. We were gonna go to Holloster but its closed for the weekend for an event. JohnboyTRD and I are meeting at Frank Raines in about 2 hours, camping tonight and wheeling tomorrow. Come out and join us.

If the trail is not closed, you could run it south to north. Then back south. Camp along Utica Reservoir on the south end. The trail is not long.
