Good god here in NH I pay $17 for guys that carry sheets of drywall and sweep floors. And with a brain you'd get $25.

Just remember, where the money is the living costs usually follow. I could go work in the patch in the Oil Sands as an environmental consultant and make +100K plus a year, but my job security would be zero and to live in camp up there costs $$$$. It's all about finding a balance between what you make and how much you spend. Sometimes you do have to move to find that, but in general you should be able to find that without going across the country.

If I were you I'd be looking for work. Make a resume and list it on line with monster.Com and other job search sites. Also look into federal jobs. USAJobs.Com, I believe is what's it's called. They have a good search section for federal jobs in local areas.

It never hurts to look for work. You have to look out for yourself, because the employer rarely will go the extra mile for you.

I found my current job online but my resume is still listed online. I was in commercial/industrial electrical construction, buy work has gotten so slow I had to start looking else where.

Wow, that's cheap labor. I'm a licensed surveyor on Long Island and can tell you the salaries are much higher in the Northeast than in the South. A while back i was looking to move to Florida but I would have had to take almost a 50% pay cut, hence i'm still here. I started at the bottom like you as a rodman, sharpening machette's stocking trucks and doing all the jobs nobody else wanted to do. I wish you lived around here, we're always looking for someone with an eagerness to learn! Those make the best employees!....In my opinion, i think you should look for another company that will appreciate and use your experience from this place to move to the next. Your willingness to learn and work is hard to come by nowadays!.....Good luck!

Having worked cross country surveying back when you measured with a 200' chain that you still threw when you were done (no reel), plumb bobs and chaining pins, I can attest to the fact it can be hard work. Not as much as it use to be, but cutting line is still cutting line, when that is needed. I still have 2 of my blades, my bob and my reading glass (transit man, K&E 30 second gun. Whoo hoo)

Anyway, you've had lots of reasonable advise, based on acceptance of your side of the story. We have no way of knowing the other side.

Staying in that vein, you need to be working and learning as much as possible in this job while looking for the next job. Always better to seek a job while you have one, rather than when unemployed.

Don't worry about what other folks make, hours they have or their work habits. It's not your concern when you are not in charge. The only influence you have is to lead by example, and it would seem you are trying that, but no one is noticing.

May you next job be an improvement for you financially and a better recognition of your skills and work ethic! And may it come quickly! When you resign, give them a courtesy letter, and thank them for the opportunity you had to work with them, and mention a couple of specifics that you learned that will help you in the future. That keeps the bridges intact. Not that you might ever go back, but you just never know how things could come around again. In this day of M&A, the place you are leaving could buy where you are going...........

Another thought is find out if any large outfits have in house crews, like the power company. Most probably outsource the work, but you never know, some may still do their own.

    Good luck!

    This.

I'd gladly work for 2/3 the pay in the South rather than pay heating oil costs and property taxes in NH. I own a home there, so it's not like I'm not 'invested' in the topic.

I work with a guy that used to live in New Jersey, he told me he made double the money up there, but the money he makes in Georgia goes farther because everything is cheaper. His wife was even able to quit her job and be a stay at home mom here.

yeah, you def have to add in the cost of living in an area to see how good a salary is. Long Island is an expensive place to live.

Last year.....if you aren't on your parents health insurance, which I assume you are until you are 26, you had to pay a hefty fine for not having health insurance. This question would have been answered on your tax return, hopefully you filed your taxes this year.

What about Massachusetts or Rhode Island...where you get to pay all that, PLUS sales and income tax! :(

I knew I moved north for a reason....................
