It's the same as the harbor freight unit, which I own, except it is air over hydraulic.

You are not gonna be very happy unless you have a lot of hours with it. I consider myself a good fab man, but this bender missed me off. It has been very close to going into the metal recycle bin.

I figured that. I was only looking into it because I found one really cheap locally. Thanks for the info.

Also don't plan on doing any thinner wall tube with that kinker. It'll live up to the name kinker haha.

So when it comes to making a stand for a manual bender, I don't have the option of drilling into the floor. How else can I make it stable enough? Would it work if I just put the mount on a big sheet of metal or some type of base frame? Has anyone mounted their bender vertically so that you push the handle down instead of to the side?

    I have the JD2 model 32

Assuming you dont have hydro... I think it would be difficult to get enough leverage on the pull/push bar vertically unless its super thin wall tube...

    This.

I struggled with my Compact Bender (for bending round and flat stock..) until I finally got pissed and tacked it to my table when I was fabricating a bench with a lot of bent parts.

You're going to struggle without a solid mount with a bender that utilizes leverage (via manual bar) to bend tubing. Not saying it's impossible, but it's going to be a motherfucker.

Could you build a mount that would slide into the hitch receiver on your truck? Build a mount platform that you can park your truck on top of?

Keep in mind that all of these options are going to severely limit your throw on the bender...

I could do a hitch mount. But my truck is taller than the garage door and the street parking in front of my house is sloped for water drainage.

My garage is about 10'x20'. The other option would be to build a work bench along the back wall and mount the bender off of that.

Would mounting the bender off a bench cause problems with clearance? I'll be making bed racks and sliders. So nothing too complex. I'll go to hydro at some point, just need to build a few projects to get the funding for a hydro set up.

Maybe someone with more experience will chime in..

I keep returning to the fact that mounting the bender to a stationary bench will drastically limit the amount of throw.

Unless that bench can resist 6k lbs. of rotational force, you'd be better off spending the money and time that you'd be putting into a bench and going to either an air/hydro or electric/hydro conversion.

Sorry dude, but I really don't think there's any way around drilling.

Yah. It's funny because there are a couple posts on that link with people claiming success with a manual bender without having to bolt it down.

Looks like I need to just go ahead with the hydro set up.....

    Built some brownie points today.

    One for the girlfriend.

One for a buddy that brews some kick *** out of this world beer...

Wonder which one is "worth" more?...

I'm looking to add a swing out tire carrier to my rear bumper. Whats the best way to set up the hinge and latch?

Double shear on the pivot for sure IMO! Having the top of a pivot spindle unsupported is asking for problems eventually.
Latch is debatable. You want the arm supported/held in all directions though to prevent fatiguing. simply holding it shut may still allow for up/down movement of the arm when on the trail and rough roads and if that pivot isnt double shear then it's going to fatigue the hell out of it. I use a dual shear pivot, lock open pin, and a hold down bolt to keep it shut and from bouncing up/down on every carrier I build.
The Synergy latch system is nice, but a bit expensive and a little bulky.
