2x8 or something with some bolts countersunk into it for the reel, and then bolt that onto two adjoining studs in your wall? Just a thought.

You might be able to get by with a 2x ledger spanning across a couple studs (3 or 4). Attach the ledger to the studs using lag screws - 2 per stud. Then you should be able to bolt it to the ledger.

There are just a couple places from what I remember that could be a problem. All it takes is one to screw me over though.

I agree, I would only add that you need to drill a pilot hole for the lag screws .....It's an absolute requirement when lagging in 2x4s.

In the past I have mounted the reel to piece of 1" ply with (4) 1" x 3/16 lags. The plywood piece should be the height of the reel and wide enough to catch two studs (20" wider to hit (2) studs 16" on center).

Then take out two of the lags that are mounting the reel in the fixed position on the reel mountng plate and back off the other two lags, which should be the slider positions on the reel mounting plate....then finally mount the plywood to the studs (ceiling) with 2" x 3/16" lags ( with just 1/4" through holes in the plywood x4 places) and after mounting plywood slide the reel onto it.... re-installing the third and fourth lag in the reel mounting plate, do you don't have to hold the weight of the reel while screwing lags.

    Done it once or twice...

Good call on the pilot hole. I forgot to mention that. I always do a pilot anytime I'm working with lags.

I love that trail guide book. It's pretty good for getting a great general idea of the trails although trails do change with time and weather.

Me too...It definitely helps you set a destination (which is half the battle for me) and gives you an idea, but yes, I have been caught of guard with trail condition....the 50 year rain last year tore many trails up, made even a few virtually impassable.

Need a quick response from anyone, what is the height between the top or middle of the bed rails to the top of the stock bedside plastic?

So from the floor of the bed to the top of the bed rail?

Edit: if so, I've got 18 3/8 at the rear near the tailgate and 18 1/4 at the front near the cab and 18 1/4" at the center near the end of the wheel well. Not sure if that's what you're aiming for tho

I think it's just shy of 1.5" between the middle of the rail to the top of the bedside plastic
