Thought I'd pass on some information.

Spoke with a Toyota general manager today and was told that the 2016's would start arriving on our lots in September. I'm in Pennsylvania.

I also know a guy that's fairly high up working directly for Toyota. I haven't had a chance to press him for information since last year when he confirmed there would be a new 3rd generation for 2016, but will post anything if I have the chance to speak with him and have new information before anything hits the press.

Oh I see. Sorry you probably went upside down but glad you're back in a taco!!! How was the mpg, power, comfort, ride etc? Yes it may be financially backwards but calculators and bank statements can't compute one important thing: your happiness. Drive what you love!!!

If anyone here is close to the Canadian border, look up this outfit:

    https://www.krown.com/process/

My last vehicle was 15 years old when I replaced it and was treated annually with Krown oil spray and it had zero rust on it. My current 13 year old vehicle was never treated with Krown and this morning, I just pushed my finger through the spare tire wheel well. Both vehicles were the identical make and model. I'm now waiting for specs on this truck to be released to see if it will fit in the garage.

About 3k upside down, but like you said to me it was worth it. I will give GM this the truck had phenomnal mpg, I would get 19-21 in the city and 23-25 hwy from a 4wd v8 double cab, it was insane. The extra materials they add to the firewalls, wheel wells and the door seals, the thing was creepy quiet and GM trucks always ride really smooth. Going back to my tacoma was definately rougher of a ride, loss of creature comforts, but I know at 200k I wont be having issues with this truck and I fall in love everytime I see her in the driveway, lol.

Damn. It baffles me how a 6000 lb v8 gets better mpg than a 4000 lb v6. I have never heard the answer to this. I understand Toyota burns rich (I think) for reliability which I agree with but that's a huge contrast, there must be something more.

Well the new ecotec small block v8's run on direct injection and cylinder deactivation, which plays a part.

I see. I test drove one once, probably the same engine you had. Cylinder deactivation was cool but I don't really trust it not to fail one day. I don't have any supporting evidence, it's just a feeling. Have they been out long enough to see how they hold up? What would the repair bill be? (If you didn't do it yourself)

Do you (anyone) think the 3rd Gen will rival that mpg? If not... notice the only thing keeping usafwx in a Tacoma was the look and feeling of it, which is subjective. Take away the fact that we are partial to Tacomas and that full size gets better mpg, rides better, is more comfortable, etc. For someone who feels about Chevy the way we do about Toyota, that must be heaven.

We still have reliability and off road prowess though, to the Tacomas defense.

The small block chevy engine especially the 5.3 has been considered a great and reliable engine, one of the few things chevy did right, the cylinder deactivation and direct injection are just new features to the current engine. Time will tell, but outside of that its a proven engine. My roommate has a silverado with the older version 5.3 and its pretty damn reliable, with the silverados its not the powertrain but the other things you have to start fixing replacing as it gets older.

Usafwx, I edited my post before you quoted me. Also, wow I'm surprised it is that reliable. I thought I heard problems with the cylinders wearing at different rates. What other things besides powertrain?interior?

Not sure about the uneven cylinder wear, I could see that for sure, but in today's consumerism society most people will likely own the truck for only a few years and have something else, unless your a taco owner. Well on my roommate's truck he had his power sliding window go out, his heated mirrors melted on the driver side and he had an issue with a suspension component not sure what exactly, the truck is a 2011 with 65k. In my opinion the GM just didnt feel as solid build quality as my tacomas have been. But like I mentioned great features, great ride, great mpg, just not sure like I am with my taco that it will be pretty much bulletproof if I had decided to keep it for the long haul.

GM has had a problem in the past with uneven cylinder wear on engines with cylinder deactivation. As well as oil consumption issues.
Toyota is not taking the cylinder deactivation route but in instead it is switching to the aktinson cycle under low loads to save fuel. Should be more reliable.

Herniator you are right. Toyota sticks with vvt rather than deactivation and now, Atkinson simulation.

I do have an answer to my own question previously. The 4.0 is the same v6 engine from 2005 and if you compare it to other truck engines in 2005, it was more efficient. So it's bad now because it hasn't needed to change because of sales. So hopefully now that there is a redesign we will have again, best mpg. But from Toyotas statements on it for whatever reason the mpgs won't be stellar.

Used motor oil is the pits ! It's filled with contaminants, clogs the sprayer and is miserable to work with. You save very little by doing it as it takes at most, two quarts of oil. G-oil, which is a synthetic, bio degradable oil you can order or find in some places works best. There are other bios worth it. $8 or so for oil is not worth the savings. Painting grease on with a brush is better for frames.

He was a cheap SOB, he drove an ol' early 60's Mack...that had something like 3,000,000 miles on it...he just kept on rebuilding it. This was my highschool friend's dad back in the late 80's, I remember hanging out in the garage while sprayed one of the cars (a 60's Dodge Dart) with a pneumatic sprayer.
