I have been driving my Tacoma more often recently, and have noticed that the speed doesnt seem to be correct on the odometer. When I'm going 70 mph everyone is passing me, so I go to 80 and I am just keeping up. In my Toyota Matrix when I do 70, I am passing everybody. My wife and I tested it and it seems to be a 6 mph difference, any suggestions why this is?? Thanks.

I have an 09 and from day one my speedometer has been off. I asked toyota about it and they said it was within specs. mine isn't as bad as yours though.

Same here. Mine seems to be about 4% off with the stock 245/75/16 dunflops. If I have done my math correctly, I think if I go to 265/75/16 it will be accurate.

I don't blame ya though it does sound kinda weird, it must be a California thing. I just hear some people here in California call it that, I don't.

Mine is off, stock 09 PreRunner Sport. About 2mph at speeds 45 and below and 3-4 at 60mph and above. Checked with GPS after I noticed after we went by a speed board and it didnt match.
Maybe they just gear them one way and since the trucks have different tire options from the factory it throws it off. Sounds like they picked some kind of middle ground and went with that.

I have an 09 SR5 4x4 with 245's and i noticed when my speedometer says 80, i am really going only 74. I have tested it with two different GPS Units and a car behind me. I took it into toyota to have them do something about it. And of course there answer for everything, "IT IS IN SPECS".

Well I had my own fix. I lifted it 3" and put the BFG AT 265/75/16's on it. Well looky here, I am going 80, and everything says 79. I think I can live with a 1 mile difference vs the Toyota's In Spec of 6!!!

Mine is off about 3 mph around 70 (checked with GPS), it says faster than I'm really going, they do have some leeway with the speedo, and 3 mph aggravates me, but I'm more worried about racking up additional miles. If it's off 2 mph at 50 mph than would I show 50,000 miles when i only have 48,000?

Mine is off as well on my 09 Sport 4x4. There's another thread already about this. Appears to be a widespread problem with the 2009 models and from the other thread IIRC Toyota said they don't have any fix for it. But I'm sure it's technically within specs. Mine is off about 3 or 4 mph at highway speeds. Reads higher than I'm going. Would ahve never noticed if it wasn't for my radar detector which displays your speed via GPS. Also used my GPS and it read the same speed as my radar detector. Not really concerned with it myself.

stop with the tire size guys! It's the gauge that is reading too high, pretty known fact :). Mine reads 6% too fast.

Its only the gauge in error. The ODO is pretty close.
