Yeah, the ASUS have plenty of CPU horsepower to support any normal house's devices. I run a RT-N66u. I just haven't been that impressed with the radios in them, in high-noise environments they're worthless for throughput past about 100ft. If you don't have too much 2.4GHz noise in your area, they'll easily reach out to the end of your block.

If possible, I would highly recommend a standalone AP if you are needing high def and multiple clients connecting via wireless. Built in units are sharing resources on the all-in-one box.

If you can, i would ceiling mount an Ubiquiti AP or AP/PRO or AP/AC (802.11ac capable). I have the AP Pro and it reaches to the end of my street. Granted I only have it mounted on the frist floor ceiling. I am looking to install a second on the 2nd floor with the AP-LR (long range) to go a supported 183M from the central radio. A stand-alone can handle and process multiple bands and multipe hosts connections more efficiently.

My parent's in law have a netgear (forget what mode) but that goes down 6 houses down solid on my Samsung GS5. N-speed too.

Selecting the right channel is going to be hard in dense neighborhood's. The fact that my SSID reaches out past its 122M mark, it is interfereing and drowning out the other Netgear and ASUS wireless networks; but probably not within the confines of the unintended house. I get full strength with Ubiquiti in my entire house.

I wouldn't say I'm a standard user, but I would probably need a little help setting up anything beyond typical consumer devices.

Also, can you help friends with getting free Asus routers?

Or can I at least take you up on your offer to test one out?

IMO it's going to be even worse when AC becomes standard. To achieve gigabit they increased the channel bandwidth to 160MHz (although there is an 80MHz mode), vs 40MHz with 802.11n. That means 1/4 the channels to choose from.

I'll loan you an Asus router to test for a few weeks if you like.

Tho looking at your pic it may be tough with one router. Might want to look into 2 routers.

Cool man, let me know a good time to meet up. Josh says you're in the same neighborhood as him so I could probably just walk to your house to get it.

Edit: Do the ASUS routers you are talking about support bridge mode or do I need custom software for them to run like that? I don't have ethernet run in the walls so I need something that can do it without being hardwired together (though I am familiar with how to do that between two routers)

There's "bridge" mode, which will use one of the radios to connect to the main router, and cause the secondary router to act as a basic switch. This doesn't cause it to act as a repeater though. It just gives wired devices access to your wifi network.

The other option is AP mode, which is where the secondary router acts as an extra access point, but it needs to be wired to the first router over ethernet. I'm honestly not sure if doing a simultaneous bridge + AP mode to wirelessly link them is even possible on the stock firmware, but if it is, it still degrades performance quite a bit since it has to do twice the work.
