I just traded in my 2011 2.7 5 speed for a new 2015 TRD Off Road edition with the 4.0 and 6 speed.

I'm really loving the truck so far, but after reading up a little, it seems like most aren't happy with the manual transmission, which I got.

So far, it hasn't given me any issues, except that it is pretty stiff to push all the way over to get it into reverse.

Is this transmission as problematic as the earlier ones that had problems, and is there anything I can do to avoid having problems, such as changing to a better oil, better shifter, etc?

    Thanks

I've had my 2015 6spd since August and I've had no problems so far! But I have been told switching out the trans fluid will make it shift smoother

Paying attention today...after reading up...I noticed third is a little tougher to shift into.

It doesn't grind or anything but just feels kinda crunchy from 2nd to 3rd.

    4th to 3rd feels fine.

I didn't even notice this until I read some complaints about it. Ignorance is bliss. Lol

By trouble...do they just not shift well or is there serious problems like the tranny going completely out? If there are serious problems, I might as well start saving up so I can trade it off when the warranty runs out.

I'm no expert, but when I researched it before purchasing my truck my conclusion was problematic as in "people don't like the way it shifts and the gearing choices" but that it was otherwise reliable.

I can live with the gearing choice and the shifting. It really isn't horrific like the mustang I had with the getrag.

Im going to do the Redline MT-90 oil swap new week and see if that helps the third gear shifting.

As far as shifters go, does the TRD short throw shifter help take the notchiness an clunkiness out?

I put the MGW shifter in my mustang which was about the best short throw shift you could get and it made shifting ever tougher in my opinion.

Congrats on the new truck!! I have the TRD Quickshifter and am totally satisfied with the 6 speed at this point... Shifts smooth. I have never driven a Tacoma with the std shifter, but from what I have read ithe Quickshifter makes a big difference with the feel(clunkiness) vs the stock shifter..

I was just about to start researching this same thing! 3rd gear seems to be the toughest gear to get into smoothly. It's tough to get used to coming from the precise shifting of my TSX with short shifter. Driving my gf's Jeep Wrangler definitely helped acclimate me to this transmission since they both shift very similar. I may have to give the TRD or URD short shifters a try!

That's not awful at all actually. Somewhat expensive lesson to be sure, but better to be happy in the long run. I'd certainly be much happier taking the $1000 hit now with a brand new truck then trying to trade a used MT for a used AT a few years from now.

I have driven and owned MTs for almost all my vehicles, but with my Tacoma I did choose an AT in the end. Enjoy your second new truck!
