2.7 liter power

Hey guys i just wanted to know how many of you think that the 2.7 liter delivers adequate power and if so do you think that it will be enough to tow a 4500 pound trailer

 

That's a lot of weight for a 4 banger to pull. Personally I would go V6 no doubt.

 

I think the power is fair. I do 0-60 in about 10 seconds, about as fast as a small economic car. As for the trailer, I've read a thread where a guy was towing over the 3500 lbs limit with no problem.

 

My 2.7 is quite peppy with an empty bed but start loading and you can feel the loss of power. For towing that much weight, I'd go with the V6.

 

That's too much weight. The truck is only rated for 3500 lbs. I love my 2.7 and have no problem towing my 18' bowrider boat... but I'd guess it only weighs about 2000 lbs. with fuel & gear. You're gonna need more truck to tow 4500 lbs.

 

The power on our 2.7L is great. Remove the 2ndary filter, using an aFe drop-in filter, and adding an aftermarket muffler will give it some more hp. If you want to tow something that heavy, maybe go with a V6.

 

3500 lb is the rating for the 2.7 fyi, so I'd sy no to the 4500. If you are "just moving stuff" on the property, flat and short distance, and below 20 mph....well I wont admit to doin it before lol.

 

well 4500 pounds is kinda the max id be towing and not for extremely long distances plus i cant really afford the v6

 

My concern is, no matter how nice our trucks are, the reg cab 2.7 weighs in at 3600 lb in 4x4 trim, and its short. The weight transfer goes from axle to axle faster and in greater weight #s than it would on say a DC v6. Also a lot of weight "wrestling" the truck to jack-knife it easier. The 2.7 can handle the weight fine using higher revs and the right gears, but just isnt a good idea around red lights freeways... u get the idea.

 

the 3500 lbs limit is for idiot-proofing the clutch. If you know how to drive I guess there would be no problem.

 

i tow 5k pretty often with my v6 and i can def feel it behind me. sometimes i wish i had a tundra for its towing power

 

Your truck may have the power for flat, level towing of 4500lb, but it sure doesn't have the brakes for it.
And if you have an accident, you are knowingly over the limit....liability goes to you.

 

Are braking system different from the 4cyl to the V6 w/ tow package?

Pulling the weight is alot easier than stopping or controlling it on downhills. I have a V6 DC and tow about 5500lbs with my camper loaded, it does the job but I find myself missing my 06 DC Tundra 4.7 on hills, I dont miss it when I have to park in a parking garage though.

 

Even when you put in air bags to handle the load,digital brake controller,and weight distribution bar(I hope you do those things!), your springs are lighter than a v-6 access or double cab, the brakes may be smaller too , I dont know that for certain though. When the trailer out weighs the truck, the truck handles different. I have no real idea what the transmission is capable of, but some one here does I'm sure.

 

For that kinda weight fogeddabout it! If you are towing on the hiway at a min. you want the V6, but I would go with a Tundra.

I have a Tundra and a V6 Taco, the Tacoma sucks towing anything over 2500k. Yes it will do it, but sucks fuel and feels like the motor is going to explode in the mountains.

Last time I did my laundry it weighed about 70 lbs on the passenger seat and had about 50 lbs of groceries on the floor and I could notice it was slower. But 32's make everything a little slower to begin with.

If they had a reg cab 4x4 V6 as an option, I might have gone that route but I didn't want an extended cab truck, so I got 4. For me it's fine but I wouldn't tow anything more than a couple dirt bikes or jet skies or maybe a 14' aluminium boat.

 

Ahh the mythical 4.0 reg cab, bucket seats, with the 5' bed TRD'ed and an auto to boot

 

I am very pleased with the power of my 2.7l in a 4x4 access cab. Good fuel economy!
It towed a 1500lbs tent trailer pretty well, but I would say 4500lbs is beyond its comfort zone. I think the specs says its max tow rating is 3500lbs. It will be working hard and moving slow with 4500lbs!!!
