Under coating on new Taco

Hi all,

I was crawling underneath our new Tacoma 4x4 and I see there is no undercoating. Just bare metal.

I live in SoCal so don't have to worry about road salt..except for the beach

Should I worry about undercoating it? I would probably just buy those rubberized coating cans from Napa and have at it.

We plan on keeping this truck for 10 years.

 

For 10 years, dont even bother. However, it just might increase your resale value. Here in Canada, few people would dare to buy a vehicle without rust protection/under coating.

 

Hey Surf I've bought 10 cans of that 3M rubberized and went to town. I will be going up to CT in a couple years sand and salt up there is brutal. Its a good beer drinking activity.

 

Exactly. I did it for my FJ40 years back and it was a messy job. Few beers would probably help.

I live in Seal Beach, no salt either, but it helps with sound deadening within the cab.

 

I live in Canada (west coast BC) and did not undercoat mine. I looked under the truck and there was no bare metal. the frame is coated, there is alot of plastic all over and and even the cab has some sort of paint on it. after asking many people this is what i concluded and was told.

If everything that is removable is not taken off it is not worth getting done such as breaklines (should be done at the factory). It will block sound, but the ride is not even noisey. If the undercoat gets damnaged it will hold more moisture in. The manager at the dealership said it was not money well spend, with the rest of the toyota ECP...

it is just one view... But if you are in salt lands, by all means do it!

 

Hey you Canuck, I beg to differ. Toyota would give you a life time warranty if you get the under coating/rust proofing from them. If it’s the same thing, it’s a deal for $500 . Excludes perforation rust, though. Only problem is, you have to take it in every year to maintain the warranty and pay $45. It’s a Toyota, so its worth it. By the way, Vancouver Canucks – not so good . The Leafs Rule .

It was around $500, but there was no life time warranty from what i was told. If this is true, a deal it is!

for central canada you can't go wrong... the amount of salt they lay down on the road here is limited at most. heck its 10 out and pissin' rain lol.

 

From December to March, all the salt in the world is dumped on our streets hence rust proofing is big business here. It costs $599 and NOT $500 as previously mentioned. You have to take it in yearly to keep the warranty valid.

 

Is this worth trying yourself with a new Tacoma (06')? If so, what's the stuff called?

 

Stuff I used was NAPA Rubberized UnderCoating.
Works fine.

Smart to mask off any areas that you don't want to get the stuff on.

Just undercoated our 07 Taco with about three cans of the stuff.

 

Dude, I don’t know the weather condition in Maine for sure. I believe it’s in New England. Please update your profile so other members can help answer your questions. If it snows there and you’ll use road salt, it is highly recommended. It’s called rust proofing. Cheers.

I also live an area that lays the salt down like it is "going out of style". As Themaster said, it cost me 599.00 CAD, for the Diamond Kote rust proofing and sound dampening undercoat from the Toyota Dealer. I am very satisfied with the products appearance. I think that it was the same product used on my previous 2000 Tacoma before I bought it used and the undercarriage of that truck looked like brand new, There wasn't any rust underneath that truck after 5 Canadian winters...I have used Krown Rust control and Rust Chek (Canadian Product I believe?) and the Diamond Kote appears to be some quality stuff.

I am anal with waxing and other protection products for my trucks and would definately recommend rust protection to anyone living in areas where salted roads are travelled.

Oh God, not another Canuck and he use’s the “A” word . I think Krown Rust protection is better than what the dealers offer but more expensive. Did you get the paint and upholstery protection too?

Is the noise reduction that noticable?
The only Hockey here in Indianapolis is the "class A" Ice.

I am not sure how much the noise reduction actually cuts down on noise. I still find that my stereo is somewhat drowned out by road noise, despite having the undercoat. The largest benefit I see with the noise reduction undercoat is protection from stones and other road debris on the undercarriage primer coat. It seems to provide a thick and durable layer of protection.

 

Hey everyone, well i undercaoted my 05 prerunner off road today.
let me give you all some advise,

i used the 3m aerosal can stuff you buy at auto parts stores.
it looks pretty good, well see how it holds up to the salt in GUAM when i get there in march.

To start off be sure you have the under side as clean as possible to make things easy. i masked it all off and cleaned all the areas i wanted to do.

my first mistake- Make sure you wear coveralls, like for painters, something to cover your face, and some latex gloves. it took my wife and i almost thirty minutes in the shower to scrub and rub off all the spray that landed on my skin.

under the rear area of the bed there are some points of interest where you should pay close attention, its an area where water could sit with dirt and sand causing the cancer we are trying to avoid.
