    Why do people talk about having spare wheel bearings? I was always under the impression that they just wear out and get play - not seize up

    A spare wheel bearing wont do you much good unless you carry a 10 ton press with you as well. The reason for carrying a spare hub with a good wheel bearing is for the reason you just said. Yes, a wheel bearing can cause catastrophic failure but it's more likely that you just end up driving down the road at 20 mph scared shitless that your truck is gonna come apart and your wheel fall off. Every trip I go on is 200+ miles one way. I'll just stop and change my hub out

    Not true. I changed my wheel bearings with a block of wood and a one pound hammer. That was 50K miles ago. That said, they don't suddenly grenade. Check them every oil change, and you will catch it before something catastrophic happens.

    I believe this. You are also self proclaimed as the hillbilly engineering king so this sounds like exactly what you would do. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say for 99.9999999% of people on the trail it's gonna be much easier to swap out a complete hub then a wheel bearing.

    Jack up the front until both tires are off the ground. Grab the tire by the top and bottom and see if it moves. It should be tight. This also gives you a chance to check out the bushings in the LCA's and UCA's, CV boots, as well as tie rods and steering rack. Glance at the brakes and shocks while you are in there, and slide underneath to check U-joints, check for oil leaks, and move to the rear end. If you do this very simple procedure every oil change (and fix what is bad along the way) your truck will last until you are old and grey.
