The notch is to pop your key or something in so if your steering wheel ever gets locked you can still disengage the transmission to move it. But there is a light under the PRDNL letters ;) and the glove box and the ash tray. They take a different type I believe it's a 74 or something but don't quote me I changed all of mine

I will have to look but I don't recall if the light under the gear indicators worked the other night, truck is still very new to me.

as to releasing the steering if it gets locked, I don't understand what the shifter has to do with the steering wheel, they aren't connected in any way

Well you know how you can't move he shifter unless the brake is pressed? Which in turn can only be done if the key is in the ignition haha I had my steering wheel lock one time and I could get my key to turn. I'm sure they don't really go hand in hand but it applied to me once :D

wow, I did not even realize it could do that, get stuck I mean. I have had the steering lock get stuck if its under pressure to turn such as uneven ground but never had the shifter get stuck.

    I learned something new today

cant wait for it to get dark to test those shifter lights, how many are there and what bulb numbers do they take if I need em?

Theres only one of the shifter. one additional for glovebox, another for ashtray, and another for the ring around the key.
    * I ordered the ones below. I did have to have the side down like .00001 of an inch with a knife to get it to lock in. I used the same ones for my AC controls also

its very strange but my key cover completely covers the key ring light so I cant even tell if it works or not but even if it did I wouldn't be able to see it.

on my 99 it was easy to see so I don't know what changed for the 04? maybe if I swapped it for an older cover it might show better?

I dont believe there is a key ring light at all. I have the same year, plus trd. And ive never had a ring light around the ignition. Plus when i switched to the "over done" blue lights i didn't see a light. At least i dont recall.. I may or may not have smoked a lil something something that day though!!! And a plus one for the shifter/steering unlock thing. Ive wondered for 11 YEARS what that was.... Now i wanna go get it all stuck just to try it out to you

Keakar, im gonna start charging for links...!
This is an awesome right up on how to do hvac lights... May have other useful information, but again I may or may have not smoked a lil something something.

check is in the mail buddy, plus tip

that's why this place feels like family, guys always go out of their way to be helpful unlike some forums where people are rude or think its best to make people do their own searching to find stuff. lets face it, sometimes its lazy but most times its to avoid bad info and get the correct info you need since there might be 10 wrong ways shown to do something and whats the odds a person wont use one of those wrong ways.

ps - I made sure to buy the short bulbs but if they don't fit, I have been using that swapping bulb socket trick for years on our Christmas lights, they keep changing the socket shapes on those things but I have a bag of about 500 spare bulbs from old light strings gone bad lol.

the auto-shifter light is a 74 and there is one. also after tearing apart a shifter not sure it would actually release from park. it's controlled by a module on the base of the shifter plate (little white box) and electronics.

The white box is the module that interprets whether the brake is pressed or not. To override that and get it out of park use the part noted in previous posts!

didn't somebody say you can change the recirculate and a/c button lights too? mine are orange and I prefer the green of my 99 but if im changing I might aswell go blue with those as well but I definitely want to get rid of the orange there.

ps - I fell a sleep watching news and forgot to even check those lights last night, that's how it is when you get old lol

is that the light bulb under the "D" on the shifter with the green wires and red tape? and how do I access it if I need to? how much has to come apart?

I think it's a process to change those on the 01-04s but I'm sure it can be done haha. For the shifter I only had to pull up the plastic piece around it until I could reach in and turn the socket out

thanks guys, I don't have a center console, its 60/40 bench seat so I have the double cup holder floor trim around the shifter so I guess that's all that needs to go.

im thinking a standard white LED bulb is best used there unless you guys found a better color to use? I don't think its transparent enough for color to matter but im just assuming.

I don't remember if you already said it but what bulb does it take? I might try one of them orange ones I take out the dash

I have blue and they are all blue... White would be better for a more stock look, it takes one of the 74 bulbs I posted above.

well I was thinking of a more muted color that is more light a night light brightness so basically just enough to see your gear selection without your eyes being drawn to it so I may have to try a red one to get that.

looks like the T5 shows as the same as the 74 wedge bulb but when you search t5 it comes up with the neo twist sockets

im starting to get mad at you guys because now you got me wanting to replace every bulb in the truck, this shit is addictive lol :annoyed:

If you are looking for a soft color, I highly suggest uv/blacklight. It comes out purple and its easy to see if you look but definitely not distracting

All of those lights dim with your dash lights. I don't think any color is going to overbearing light wise
