Not a great picture, but they do hold a decent amount of weight, I had to make a frame for 25 sheets of drywall to sit on since the wheel wells aren't 4' apart. There is 1 2x4 in each slot with a center support from the board to the bed to help with the weight, and then it is resting on the cap of the relentless tailgate plate, it was well over 1,000 lbs.

Check out the UWS TBS52SPLA.. It's a crossover box but it's made for a stepside ranger.. measurements fit perfectly between the wheel wells and would rest on the bed itself. Since it's a crossover, you'd have a little bit above the wheel wells too. The TBC42W chest fits perfectly between the wells as well. Sits even with the top of the bedsides.. That's what I have. Some pictures in my build if you're interested.

I think I'll make a couple and spray them with Rustoleum Truck Bed Coating. I may have to do a little bit of plaining to compensate for the coating thickness. I've got the short bed so any little bit of getting extra space is a plus.
