D-ring install help? Can't remove bed bolts.

I've been trying all night to get the bed bolts out with no luck. I've tried multiple impact guns and a breaker bar. I am using a T-55 torx bit. Ive tried spraying wd-40 on the bolt but i feel like it's not doing much since thats not where the threads are for the bolt. Any help would be awesome. It's an 07 DCSB if that helps.

 

Look under the bed, the threads are exposed. Spray penetrating oil under there. I recommend the 25" breaker bar at harbor freight. Works great for me. Good luck!

 

You just want to install tie downs right?

I just drilled holes in my bed and then mounted them with backing plates. Simpler than removing bolts that don't want to come off.

 

I'd use liquid wrench for penetrating oil. When I installed 2 more d-rings up front I drilled 2 new holes in the corners kind of beside the drainage hole. Punched a spot, rough drilled, drilled until I got a perfect sized hole for the bolt, and installed the ring. You might need a second set of hands to keep the metal plate in place underneath. Oh yea and I used silicone on the metal plate to seal it against the frame better since it's so close to the drainage hole.

 

I'm using a craftsman ratchet and a piece of steel pipe. I just sprayed wd-40 on the exposed threads under the bed and ill let it soak. if that doesnt work ill try a different penetrating oil.

 

Lots of strength to take off. They are in pretty tight. I used the handle from my floor jack as a breaker bar. It worked.

 

The problem I have is keeping the head of the torx bit in the bolt while trying to loosen it.

 

get somebody to put their foot on the wrench to keep the bit in place.

 

Try tightening them just a hair then backing them off. Mine has blue loctite on the bolts when I pulled them out. But I got mine out with a lot of ass and a 1/2" ratchet

 

WD40 isnt helping you very much. Google penetrating oil tests and you will find lots of results similar to this;

I think the acetone-ATF ratio is 50/50.

 

Did the backing plate come with the d rings?

 

Yes! Try another fluid too. I used Fluid Film, worked great. My neighbor uses Powerblaster, I think it is called.

 

I don't want to discourage the OP from his mod, but as someone who had D-Rings installed under the bed bolts I can't recommend them. More often than not the D-Rings were blocked by the very cargo I was trying to restrain. The location is a compromise. I have also done what @bjmoose did and that is a good route to go. I have a pair of factory D-Rings installed in the front corners of the bed. The factory D-Rings from Toyota come with backing plates and are pretty stout. Another option is L-Track, which is a very robust cargo containment system, IMO. I went bananas in Jan/Feb and put some 20' of it in the bed of the truck, and bought about 20 fittings. It's awesome stuff.

 

I have used Kano Kroil on turbine hot section bolts for many years. The trick is to let them soak awhile. Always works for me.

 

Yeah I got a bit discouraged. Ordered some off Amazon and they'll be here today. I'm just going to drill holes. Seems way easier now that the torx head on the bolt is pretty much fucked. I just need something up there to tie down a motorcycle I'm picking up next week.

 

Decided to just follow the instructions.

 

I just loosened mine up yesterday to move my bed a little and had the same problem. I used an impact gun and they came right out.

Yeah they can with a backing plate.
