Axle nut torque after hub/bearing set replacement

    Front wheel bearing is pretty bad at 102,000 miles, so I ordered a hub/bearing set from BamaToy here on the forum.

    Questions:

    Does the Toyota manual say anything about the wheel needing to be on the ground supporting vehicle weight when torquing axle nut to 173 ft lbs?

    Whats the preferred and correct way to hold the axle while torquing the nut?

    Block the wheel studs from rotating while torquing?

    Put in 4wd to prevent axle rotation while torquing?

    Some other way?

    I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
    Definitely your wheel has to be up and free spinning. I would make sure there is nothing blocking wheel when you are tightening that up.
    Yes you can have on 4wd to torque the bolt.
    You can have long wrench on hub bolt so it locks to the ground.

    4wd didn't seem strong enough to hold, felt like I might break something if I kept torquing.
    Toss a buddy in the cab to hold the brakes. I normally work alone so I stick a camera tripod between the seat and brake pedal. If the wheel slips, make sure the truck's secure and start the truck. I just did both Inner CV boots and did it this way. There is also no chance of possibly damaging wheel stud threads this way.
