Hey guys, I'm new to this forum and the reason why I'm posting is because I'm looking at a brand new Tacoma I'm thinking about buying. First, I'm buying a truck because I need to tow up to 5,000 lbs (maybe once a week between DC/MD/VA with not so much hills).

Here's the deal I got, $33k out the door for a Tacoma TRD Sport, 4x4, double cab, with a manual transmission. The dealer also said he would put in writing that he will allow me to trade in the truck for a 2016 (if I wanted it) at no loss - just pay for the difference if there are any.

What are your thoughts? Personally, I am unsure whether I should get an auto or manual. I do like the manual but it shows that the auto has better MPG. And is $33k out the door (after taxes and registration) a good price?

What is this malarkey about trading for a 2016 at no loss? That is an utter bullshit lie right there there's no way you won't take a "loss". The moment you drive off the lot you just lost value.

Just at that I'd stick my hand out like I'd take the deal then pull my hand back four or fives times for good measure then I'd laugh for five minutes next Id get up kiss the best looking woman at the dealership like that famous WWII VJ Day picture then I'd go home and drink beer.

If you get the "trade in at no loss" in writing - - great. But the big question is: How much will you pay for the 2016? Dealers will not do a deal if they're losing money.

Right, that's what he said… he said if the 2016 model costs more, I'll just pay for the difference if I wanted to do a trade and yep, he said he will put it in writing.

I think my problem is, I prefer the off-road package over the sport but I like the manual transmission. I test drove both (auto and manual) and the manual feels like there is more power to it.

Also, do you think $33k is a good price out the door?

Without knowing all options it's hard to say. $33 seem like an average price.

If you are towing in that area and using Interstate 95 and the bypasses I would get the Auto. With all the traffic and it's inherent stop and go it hollers out for it. I have driven that atea with a manual tranny and it wore me down considerable more than using the auto tranny. As far as the trade in portion that is out of my judgement. Go with the auto hands down. Also make sure it has the full tow package including a transmission cooler.

I would question the dealer and what no loss means. Im assuming your financing, if you finance based on the rate the interest gets tacked on to the loan and you pay more on the interest for the first few years. So sure its 33k but if you finance the whole thing at say 5% it is now $38k. So you owe not 33k on your truck to pay it off but $38k. I find it EXTREMELY hard to believe a dealer will let you trade your used truck in not only at sticker price for a new one 33k (loss for them) or if the way you put it no loss meaning they would pay off your loan/truck for $38k which is even more outrageous. This seems very fishy. I would stay clear and $33k isnt a deal for this vehicle your basically paying sticker, I paid $32k for my Sport 4WD DCLB. The ability to trade in on a 16 shouldnt matter to you as the resale still remains high for tacomas, your better off trying to negotiate on the price of the 15 then play games about hypothetical trades on 16s that seem unrealistic on the dealers word.

Sticker price is $32,750. It is about $3,000 more with taxes, registration and fees. I also live in Maryland, just outside of DC. I would assume if I lived in the country, I might be able to get the price down some more.

We negotiated and "agreed" on the final price of $33K and then I asked about the 2016 model that is coming out in a few months (I need the truck ASAP) and he offered to trade the 2015 for the 2016 when it comes out if I am interested. I asked if he would put it in writing and he said yes. It actually surprised me too.

And no, I am not trading in anything for the 2015.

There is another dealership who offered $32,500 for the same truck out the door. I called to see if he would offer the 2015/2016 trade and he said no. I'm willing to pay the extra $500 if it means I can trade for the 2016 when it comes out.

Still dosent address the point I was trying to make. Are you financing the $33k? Then you are actually owing more than that, say at 5% you will owe $38k to trade it on a 2016, you will need to pay your dealer the additional $5k plus the difference in price on the 2016, which is a horrible idea financially.

If your dealer is agreeing to pay off your truck at $38k which you financed and thats a huge loss to them and I doubt any sales manager would allow that transaction to go through. Which makes the salesman statement fishy.

And in regards to the city/country comment I live in NJ with a ridicluous population, it should play no part in otd price, if anything there would be a higher demand for a tacoma outside the city than in. Utilize trucar.com for pricing estimates in your area.

TrueCar.com shows $33,973.00 and I am assuming this does not include taxes, registration and fees.

Correct, so $33k is the average price paid. So its not a terrible deal. Again you need to clarify the 2016 trade agreement, will they let you trade for what you owe/financed or is it going to be the $33k price. If its the 2nd of the two which I think is the case then when you do decide to trade into a 2016 you should expect to pay the negative equity of what you still owe on the truck (finance charges of loan) so 3-5k on top of the price difference of the 2016. When you buy a new vehicle you almost always always have negative equity and trading in for a 2016 would be a terrible financial decision by losing alot of money just to get into a newer model. You should consider do you like the 2016 or 15 if so wait if not then work on a better price or continue with the deal.

I would not take that deal either buy this truck and keep it or wait for the 2016 to come out and buy that instead. This dealer sounds like he is taking advantage of you need/ desire.

Unless you pay in cash on the 2015 and then trade on the 2016 you'll loose money and even if paid off you are still loosing as you are trading a barely used truck and they won't give you what you'd get if you sold it privately. If like most you've financed then you'll be upside down and be paying that diffrence. With this deal in writing he is gaining as he hopes you'll trade after a few months. If you do then he just sold a 15 then sold a 16 and gained a 15 that he will sell again at just a few grand less than what you paid originally. Car dealers are not your friend their job is to sell vechiles and make and exceed quotas. What he is seeing is three likely sales in a short time span.

The paper he is promising means nothing as in effect he is not lying but you are not gaining and you don't need any "promise" as that's how it would go down with anyone. He tricking you as you'll pay the difference which will be cost of 2016 plus financing plus whatever you'll be under on the 2015 there's your difference. No dealer is going to just straight out "swap" the difference they'd loose money do you think a dealer is going to eat the couple grand in financing? If you do I have some ocean front property in Arizona for sale.

I know, I'm not putting too much weight on the trade in. I do want to wait until 2016 model but I need a truck NOW.

If you need a truck NOW then make a straight forward, no strings attached deal for the 2015. If it has what you need and want why worry about a 2016. And then if you do get a 2016 will you then be wanting a 2017. Make the best deal you can and let it be. Only you can decide what you really want and need.
