I can sympathize w/you, but never say never. I had some nagging issues w/my '94 compact to include 1 that left me stranded beside the road while truck was still under Toyota warranty. Two dealerships, Toyota Western region, & Toyota itself were horrible, just horrible during the entire ordeals.

So I gave Toyota the middle finger for the better part of 20yrs because of the above & they lost a lot of business from me during that time. Yet, here I am currently driving a leased '14 Corolla for a DD & it's so nice for a 1st year vehicle its caused me to seriously look at getting back into a Toyota truck when the '16 comes out.

Back to OP's topic though, congrats again on the new ride, hopefully you'll love it for years to come.

I think they look like something old men would drive....which is exactly the type of people that I have seen in them where I'm from.

 

You expect someone in their 20's who's fresh out of college with a useless degree, mounds of student loans, working at subway, and living with their parent's to be in a position to get one? Most of the people I see driving new higher grade 2015 Tacomas are older guys.

 

Both articles do reference that the retained value is an "expectation." Though good on you, I didn't honestly think the Silverado held it's value like that and it does make sense that the Colorado will hold value in a similar fashion. We sell the GM trucks off of lease from my company for peanuts compared to a Ford.

 

That's who Chevrolet is advertising there truck to. Young guys who want to get out of a Corolla.

$40K for a mid-size truck is ridiculous, even for us old dudes that can pay cash for 'em. I dunno, the older I get the cheaper I become. Vehicles are such a horrible investment.

 

Agreed, but so is $60k for a half-ton full-size. They continue to offer more and more options and luxuries on trucks, and of course charge accordingly. You can still get a basic truck for a decent price.

 

I don't know where you get 60K for a half ton from lol. My wife just bought a 2015 F150 XLT XTR 4x4 Pkg 302A for just over $41K CAD (Canadian Dollars) OTD. GM wanted the same amount for a base model Z71 Colorado.

Hell, the sticker on my Ram 2500 isn't even $60K CAD lol. For $60K you are paying for a ton of luxury options that 99% of people my age don't give two craps about. You'd also have to pay sticker, and who pays sticker on a GM or Ford half ton! We like a good looking truck with some technological knobs to play with and a solid set of mechanical features. You don't need to go much over $40K OTD price to find that in a half ton.

I paid $37K CAD for my Tacoma in 2013, which would be considered a steal of a deal on a TRD Sport around here. I could of had an F150 XTR back then for the same price with similar options. The price of mid sizes has been high for a long time. I don't consider 40K into a vehicle a rediculous invest when we have a trailer and a newborn daughter. Everything around here is oil field and Ag. Every 2nd vehicle on the road is a full sized truck. I wanted my wife in something that was in that weight class, which is much safer in a collision than her old Sonata, and that could tow our trailer with ease. I didn't want to waste my time with a used truck for 20K that could have issues and little to no warranty. I wanted something we could guarantee would be running in 5 years. A new truck was the best option.

You can build a GMC Sierra 1500 Denali for over $62k

 

Got to go apples to apples. A loaded GM Canyon is roughly equivalent to a Lariat F150, not a platinum. Platinum and King Ranch trucks are basically luxury vehicles. There is apparently a Denali Canyon in the works so try pricing out one of those. Trust me, I've actually looked at, priced out, and ended up buying an F150 because of the super low price difference versus the capability of a bigger truck.

Plus you won't pay $60K for that platinum unless you're totally inept at wheeling and dealing. I walked away with about $9.5K off the sticker on my F150. You won't get that sort of rebate off a Canyon/Colorado.

Trust me, there isn't $20K OTD difference between a full sized and a mid sized. Even people who are getting just the base rebates on half tons (about $5K) are only paying maybe $3K more to get into a full size over a similar mid sized truck.

 

I agree, but we were discussing MSRP, not OTD prices.

I wasn't arguing about what deals, rebates, discounts are available, merely commenting how expensive trucks have become and can be optioned to. Just a few years ago, $45k was the retail for a fully loaded half-ton. Now, they can be optioned to over $60k. Of course no one in the right mind would pay full retail price for one, I wasn't suggesting that.

 

Too much fluff in pickup...I don't get it. Yeah, you can get a basic contractor truck closer to $30K. I am finding brand new 4 banger 4 Cyl 4WD Tacos in the low 20's (even better!)

I just can't imagine paying $60K for something I am going to beat on...I am self employed...the way I figure it...the less I spend, the less I have to work. That work thing is waaay over-rated.

 

True. the full size is probably a better buy at the various trim levels, but for me the size is a complete turnoff. I want a truck to do some Home Depot runs, camping and some light wheeling along with basic daily driving. I'm not gonna tow all that much. I would much rather habe ease of parking and the ability to actually fit two cars in my garage.

I did test drive a ram 1500 Laramie and it was nice. It took a 5 point turn to get it out if it's parking spot, but it was nice (small parking lot). This alone aside from other reliability concerns made me not want to go the full size route. Living in a big city it just doesnt make sense. I also looked into the Canyon but IMO, to me it did not seem to live up to the price for an SLT fully loaded. This was before the 2016 tacoma was announced. the 2015 didn't compare to the others as far as options go so I waited. It looks like the 2016 limited may be the compromise between size, reliability, and luxury that I have been waiting for.

 

The mid-sizes are so close to price and fuel economy of the 1/2 tons...I dunno, doesn't make much sense finically to go with a mid-size. I miss the true mini-trucks...oh well...people like me are in the minority.

 

I got a 3500 lb Casita trailer to pull. The Tacoma can pull that easily. A full-size pickup just feel ridiculous when I drive one.

 

If a mini truck was available I'd take it in a heartbeat.

 

An extra cab 1/2 ton compared to a AC Taco does feel all that bigger to me, though I used to drive Tri-Axle Macks for a living...fullsize trucks feel small to me. Jumping out of the Mack into my old F250...the Ford felt like a go-cart.

 

At the end of the day size does matter. Sometimes it's better to have something that'll fit in some smaller spaces. Remember, I own a Tacoma, and not an F150 for myself, for a similar reason. For my wife there was nothing holding her back from a 1/2 ton other than her own fear of it. One of the things that swayed her was the driving style of the newest Fords. When they got rid of that extra 800 lbs of weight the trucks drive a lot nicer on that wide wheel base than I expected. She's having no problems parking it.

 

Those look pretty darn nice. I may have to look into their specs.
