I'm trying to find myself a 1st gen Prerunner Tacoma (not really a fan of the size and look of newer ones) and am wondering if anyone has some insight into the mpg difference of these two setups. I'm only looking at trucks with manual transmissions and the 4 banger should be sufficient for me. Or even better, if someone has one they want to sell me :)

the 2x4 and 4x4 MPG really shouldnt be that different unless you drive the 4x4 in 4 high all the time. But im really just guessing

I have a 2x4 Nissan Frontier now (whose tranny just gave out), and the only time I've ever thought to myself "man I wish this was a 4x4" is the one time a year I make it to the snow. I live in a dense urban area, and don't offroad or anything. If not having it would save me a couple mpg, I'd gladly put on tire chains that one time a year, plus isn't the locking rear differential kinda the same thing?

just got a simple lift on her
about 1.5 mpg better since there are no cv axles to spin on 2wds ;)

but if your looking at a first gen, if you get a 4x4 with manual locking hubs, the mpg will be dam close to the same. maybe .1 mpg difference. lol

    I had a 2014 aclb 4cyl 5 speed that got a constant 23 mpg

    I now have a 2015 dclb 4L auto that gets 19mpg.

Only 1300kms on the new guy, might get better after a few more thousand k?

Not even close to the same, especially on ice or slick roads. I have to deal with crappy roads several months every year. 2 open diffs does better than 1 locked one. But 2 locked works really well, as longas the tires are touching the ground.
