Having a gas block allows you to install longer rail systems - like running a 15" KMR on a 16" barreled upper - without having an FSB that you first have to remove. A lot of folks also complain that a FSB gets in the way of a good sight picture when using an optic (not me - I've got an FSB and an Aimpoint, no issues).

Many will tell you that the FSB is the best gas block, and even shave the FSB down to what you see on the OEM 2 model. Depends on what you want to do.

All new Colts are standard fire control group pins and takedown pins. It was stuff during the ban era that was weird with Colt.

I'm not a fan of gas blocks that use set screws. I prefer pinned gas blocks. And under no circumstance would I recommend buying a railed gas block. That is a really poor design.

This is the shaved fsb that I had done and is similar to what Colt is using.

Yeah I missed that post at first.

Never really noticed excessive gap between receivers. All the ones I handled in the Army were fine. Mine was purple though.

Yeah you can run up to a 15" rail on that Colt rifle. I have a 13" Geissele on mine.

That is probably $1500 with the rail, sights, and light. But if you got that Colt it would probably be right at a grand once you add a rail, sights and a stock.

Don't mind the gap - has no impact on the functioning of the rifle. None.

    Silver,

Bravo Company USA has BCM KMR 15's for $280. Doing the rough math for adding sights (say $125 for front and rear folding irons), stock ($55-65), trigger guard ($10)...you could probably do it for right at $1100 or so. And a couple of PMAG's.

    For later:
Optic - Aimpoint PRO is still a great deal at $400 for NIB with mount
Light - SureFire Fury (500 lumens) on a Gear Sector mount (both for $165ish)
    More PMAG's...don't forget the PMAG's.

I've never noticed any more of a gap with a Colt than any other competitive rifles.

True. Even smoother with an adjustable gas block!

    This is no shiz-nit...

Back in 2004, I was in Kuwait, doing last minute fam firing before going north into Iraq. Just so happened that a pretty severe sandstorm decided to join us there at Udari Range.

My M4 ran perfectly - I went through quite a few mags doing everything from confirming zero for my irons and optic to transition stuff with my M9 pistol, some burst fire, etc. That lasted about 15 minutes, as we soon couldn't see a thing.

My M9, though, didn't much care for all that sand. Locked up tighter than Dick's hatband. Took it apart, and found a few little pieces of that blowing trash we called sand in the locking block. Well, it was enough.

Anyway, that Colt M4 of mine never hiccupped. Not once.

Here's a Tacoma/AR related tip. I was rebooting the CVs on my 2nd Gen today. As it turns out an AR15 barrel nut is the perfect size to beat the star back onto the CV shaft. The OD is small enough to clear the rollers and the ID is large enough to miss the splines on the shaft. I just happened to have two sitting next to my vice when I was looking for something to help with the job...and cussing profusely.

With an adjustable gas block you can go back to a standard buffer. As a rule the lower the reciprocating weight the better, as long as it still functions (with adjustable gas).

wont a gap cause the bolt to strip the next round higher on the case? I feel like that would cause the round to angle down more while being chambered and maybe have a higher change of getting the bullet caught on the front of the mag or something. I dunno.

All that is indexed by the take down pins. The gap is more likely caused by a lower that's machines short
    In theory at least
