"extreme" or high end coolers

Just get the Yeti or Pelican and be done with it!

Good read through this thread and the other you linked Simon. Honestly, fiance is getting me a Yeti this summer that I plan to use for my boat primarily, but also camping, etc... Can't wait!

 

Haha I research the crap put of stuff before I buy it. Yeti has very little insulation on the bottom of the cooler and 1.5 on the sides (less on the bottom) that is the main reason (beside double the price) I haven't jumped on that band wagon. Pelican is a solid 2in of insulation all around but I think they are a bit too tall for my bed and cover to close over.

I went with a Brute 50 quart recently. Took it to Death Valley for 5 days (avg 90's as a high in February) and still had a few inches of ice on the bottom when we finished up. I did however have it under a tonnoue cover so exposer to direct light during mid day was minimal. The outside also took a beating due to the road conditions but nothing serious.

Any pics of it in the bed ? I am very interested to see the difference in size between the 50 vs 75 qt as I can't decide which one.

I went to the kayak store and saw them.
Aluminum lid clasps. foam padded top for sitting.
Quad rails for fishing rod holders and bottle openers/ tie down points on all 4 corners
They are made by jackson Brand kayaks and look pretty sweet

I spent a few hours looking at all the major brands and measuring the dimensions for the different size coolers. If it wasn't for the tonnoue I would probably have gone with Pelican but having used the Brute through some hot days it really does the job.

 

Those Orion coolers sound awesome! After watching the vid on the website they are packed with cool stuff. $500 for a 65 qt is a bit pricey for me though

 

Yeah I was in the same boat. I think the pelican is about 1.5 inches too tall to fit. The brute coolers have always been on top of my list and I just emailed them to ask why their prices have gone up so much over the last year. When I was looking into the 75 last summer it was $85-$100 cheaper but I guess they are still cheaper than most. They are bad ass too.

 

I've been looking for a similar cooler... Mostly to double as dry storage and casting platform/seat in my skiff.

I really liked the looks of those Orion coolers. Some pretty nice features built in them... But then I looked at the prices!

DAMN!!! $450 for the 45qt size!!!! Jackson is definitely proud of their stuff!

I agree they are expensive!
Their Kayaks are also VERY expensive.
They are about $50 more than Yetis of equal size
But for $50 you get aluminum toggle latches/ bottle openers/ soft padded top /unique colors
They just came out this year so I have no idea what the reviews are on them

 

Yeti's Tundra 45 is $350... More like $100 more. But you do get some cool features for that $100... Especially the padded deck.

But I sure as hell won't be dropping that kind of money on one... Unless I can get a pro deal on it LOL!

 

Well we all know one thing.....many people will buy them lol. Expensive brands always have their following. Lots of people pride themselves on having expensive items that others can't afford. Haha all those extra features do add value and honestly cost about $10-$15 to add lol I might pay $390-425 max for the 65 but anything over than I see no value personally.

I've never personally used a Yeti so this is all my opinion, but they defiantly got in with the right outdoors stores. It seems that once you get into the "high end" coolers they will all perform pretty similar. For regular weekend worriers a Yeti would be over kill but work great. Also with them being so widely available means so are replacement parts. I mean if I needed a replacement gasket I could just call up Brute, but the idea of just going to a Scheels or similar is much quicker for the average person.
