My '09 has a cable style elevator. I've noticed that on the newer trucks ('13?) they have a chain type mechanism.

    Do I have that right?

    Why did they change it?

The chain type was the original method used years ago. My 1980 4X4 had a chain hoist for the spare. Then they went to the crappy cable type ( not sure when ), but they had issues with the cable getting corroded and the end piece coming off dropping the spare or getting so bad you couldn't get the spare to drop.

Back to the reliable chain system I think in 2011 or 2012 ( my 12 has a chain ). It also pays to get under and drop the spare occasionally and grease the mechanism.

Thanks for all the info. Mine is in really good shape, no corrosion detected and is working properly. If it becomes a problem, I'll swap it out for the chain one. Thanks.

Damn I hope they do that to my 05! They said it was part of the replacement but didn't specify it would be the chain instead of the cable.

You Canadians just may be on to something with this fluid film. Going to pick up a case and go to town when I get my rig back. That new frame will hopefully stay new for a long time.

those with a chain, the chain always falls through the rim center cap hole and dangles. Then rattles anytime i hit a bump. Anyone else have this problem?

I also flipped the spare so the valve stem points down so I can check/fill up easier.

I'm pretty sure they will. All the newer tacomas are getting them. I'd call your dealership and see what they have planned, and request to get the chain.

If you already have the cable tire hanger and want to swap to the chain hanger, or vice versa, the holes are not spaced the same for the 2 hangers. The holes are narrower on one, closer together, than on the other. I wanted to go from cable to chain only to find out I would have to drill 2 holes in the frame brace for it to line up. The chain started in 2012 and people getting frame replacements that use chain when they used to have cable tells me the frames being used are of the 2012 and up configuration. That being said, anyone interested in a chain hanger with the oem lock? I just stayed with my cable one instead of drilling the frame to make it work.

It isn't a "problem". That is the nature of a chain.

That's your leafs. Or engine ticking. Or interior panels rattling. Or rear slider rattling.
