thanks for all the Great Advice Guys.. Love the set up... I think i decided that i am going to go with the 281a. i decided it for a couple reasons. i love the 65w of power.. single band is all i really need right now because it will mostly be for trail rides and in a emergency situations. i saw a picture on the internet the other day which i want to try and achieve... I think i am going to go with a nmo series Larsen antenna as well..

My only concern would be heavy use on 65 watts might get pretty hot with zero air flow over the huge heat sink on the 281. I think the kenwood would be fine but the stuff around is not ready for that heat

I can use mine for a good rag chew on low power without any concern, haven't done that on high power yet but that's why I didn't go in front of the shifter

I can hear mine with the lid closed at 3/4 volume. If you operate on low power except when the 65 actually is needed I think it would be fine in the dash

When you set a channel to memory you can set them to low power, if you find a need to crank it up, switch over to vfo spin it to the channel and set to high power to reach distance, on the trail however in your group low will be sufficient beyond cb range. If you are meeting someone and monitoring a channel set it to high. It's easy to learn how to configure and pull over and set it. I still need to learn to operate the handheld but I've talked to someone who said tht is his preferred way

I set my "D" button to flip between H and L. No need to do anything else other than select between the two.

You could always add a 12V computer fan back there if you have the room.

its almost like Lexus said... this is the prefect package... and we are going to make it impossible to change.. i was at a couple different local shops and big box places.. the local shops said you have to buy the aftermarket dash kit and bring it for us to install.. Best Buy were like Nope we not touching it do to the Nakamichi system... Or dont get me wrong I love the AHC system but i have to spend 500 to get it uninstalled.. and its like a days worth of work... Sorry about my rant... seriously only really bad thing about the LX470 IMO..

Ham Radio Outlet had them on sale last month. I believe it was a manufacturer sale.

I really like gigaparts for ordering, but Universal Radio is also great. HRO isn't bad, and I have heard good things about hermetic too.
