I have a 2002 tacoma 4door 4cyl and I had this nasty knocking noise start happening on cold or first starts....it would get louder if I put truck in gear or under load......it was a really nasty noise had me worried......I beleive it was sticky lifter or valves sonthing of that nature.......anyway I did an oil/filter change on the truck no difference with the knocking noise...........so I decided after after some reasearching to add about a half to 2/3 quart Marvel Mystery Oil to the engine oil and I put the other 1/3 to 1/2 quart in my gas tank.....slowly but shurly after about a week of driving commuting my truck there is absolutely no knocking pinging no matter how cold it is out snd I am amazed at how much smoother, quieter , power, even seems like my fuel mikage has noticeable increase......IM SO AMAZED AT THE KNOCK IS GONE FIXED AND OVERALL SMOOTH POWER GAIN AND QUIETER OOERATING NOISE that I came onto this forum signed up just to share this...please let me know if you try this and how it works for you............MARVEL MYSTERY OIL

Sounds like you removed some gunk from an oil passage, go change your oil again, and use a HIGH detergent oil...BTW, I have a black cat named Marvel after Marvel Mystery Oil. It is wonderful stuff for old, gunked up engines. I have also found that adding a quart of kerosene BEFORE changing the oil and letting it idle for 10 minutes or so also helps remove nasty carbon deposits and soot.

Good thread, my 68 Dodge D100 was getting a little noisy on start up and a bucket of clean oil and new wix filter fixed that, yesterday. Went to complete the grease job with the speedo cable and that failed...the oil had been two years since it had last been changed, looked good, but probably got gas contaminated by too many short trips. And there has been oil and a case of filters in stock for a long time.

As for the machine tools, I like the LeBlonde lathes better than the Southbend, but Bridgeports rock...

And was is the story behind smudge? Marvel is pure black and we traded a goat for her, eight years ago, when we still lived in Texas.

The Smudge story brings back memories. 30 plus years ago, when I was still a college student and riding an OLD HD Sportster, XLCH, which I had rebuilt in the basement of my grandparents house, I went one day to pickup a girlfriend for a ride to the beach. When we got to her house, her pure white cat, Albert, rubbed up under the engine cases of the old Harley, and got a strip of 50 weight, chain lube and local dirt from nose to tail. Instead of a ride to the beach, we spend the day degreasing the cat:) My old tom cat Max has been with me now for 13 years, and has traveled many, many miles, with me, moved from three states, and lived everywhere from a old farm house between Dayton and Yellow Springs, Ohio, to urban Ft. Worth, Texas and now up Cherokee National Forest.

As far as machine tools go, I kind of grew up around them, had one professor in college who worked for Bridgeport, in Bridgeport, got my graduate degree in Industrial Engineering in Cincinnati where I got to know the LeBlond family personally and now I get to walk through machine shops with gantry mills for aerospace applications 100 feet long and 40 feet wide.

I weld a bit as a hobby, wore out a Lincoln AC225 tombstone welder, replaced that with a Hobart Handler 140 Mig, and a few months ago, got an ancient Hobart 300 amp AC only machine, but will run the 300 amps on a 60% duty cycle. The things looks to be 60's vintage and weights 450lbs plus. Found the Hobart machine at auction and put $250 worth of new leads, ground clamp and rod holder on it. Got 40' of 2" square tubing 0.120 wall yesterday and going to build some 20,000lb capacity steel horses for welding supports with 4" angle 1/4" wall tops, two pieces in a T shape. With the Hobart welder, I got a Phoenix rod oven, so now all my rod is dry and toasty.
