My engine makes all kinds of noises that don't seem "normal". It's done it ever since it was new and I now have 56,000 miles on it without any issues. I hate sitting in line by a drive through window though because then I can really hear the engine noises and they just don't sound right to me...

EDIT: mine sounds a lot like yours, but it's hard to tell for sure over a video

Dang man, that does not sound normal at all!

Please let us know what's determine and how they fixed it.

This is a trick I used to use back when I owned an Acura RSX, because my keys and I believe yours also have this feature, there's the microchip in the key that will not let the ignition fire when you start the car. I went and got a regular key blank made that did not have a chip in it. I would put it in The ignition and turn the engine over, until I saw the oil light go out. Which should mean there was enough oil pressure in the engine to not trigger the red warning light, for six or seven bucks I would have a blank made just so I can turn the engine over into the oil pressure light turned off as I'd be really curious if there was a change on the noise.
Mad that video is wild because it's loud.

I see you have 2 threads going on this issue - will respond to this one.

I thought things sounded a bit loud in your youtube video, so I went outside this A.M. and started my 2015 DC Tacoma 4.0L - 4302 miles - 5W30 conventional - dealer filter 90915-YZZD3. Engine stone cold - ambient 70F. Made a video. Tried to upload, but this site says file does not have allowed extension. Tried Windows Media and QuickTime?

Listening to the engine while standing next to it - things sound OK. Download the Android video to my laptop and it sounds a whole lot like the one in the opening thread. I let engine idle another min. or 2. Shut it off.

Came back maybe 20-30 min. later and filmed again. Noticed things had quieted down some in the 2nd video.

Mines been making it since day one. Sometimes its noticeable others time not so much. Dealer called it piston slap.

That actually does sound like piston slap. It's supposed to be pretty common with GM's. The piston is slopping back and forth as well as up and down until the engine heats up and things expand. This used to be associated with worn out engines. On a brand new motor, I'd be screaming to Toyota about it. Sounds like the bore or the rings aren't right.

I just went out and cold started my 2015, temp in garage 69 degrees, and it's quiet and smooth with no noises at all. Having dealt with piston slap in the past, this does sound a lot like it, but it's always hard to tell without hearing it in person.

    did the same...

I get noise at 1500 rpm when pressing the gas. Took in in to Toyota and Tech test drove with me. He said noise is normal and went to show me an engine they were working on.

Not possible. The 4.0 liter engine doesn't have hydraulic lifters. There is nothing to stick. It uses buckets over the spring tops to adjust the clearance using different thickness bucket.

Is your truck stick shift, I had a noise kind of like that on cold start for 2min like the first 4k miles , don't think it was as bad as yours, but I think your camera was picking the noise up and magnifying it really well. I have the 2.7 4cyl 5speed. I was concerened but it being my first brand new vehicle and first warranty car(also i am mechanic) I figured I'll let it go and bring it up at my 5k oil change. It stopped before that. This is my take on my problem. 4cyl are noisy engines. Brand new engines(although pre broken in) still need to be worn in persay, same with new clutches/flywheels ect. I really do believe it was perfectly normal. My truck doesn't make a peep now and has been the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned.
Not saying your overreacting op just something to think about. If I were you I'd go about your normal life and not even think about it. If your engine seizes up its the dealerships problem to worry about. If it's still making a racket by your next oil change then it may need to be looked into more.

There was another thread on this a while back with a noisy engine- I think they replaced everything on it and still had a nioce like yours - IIRCR it was the oil pump in the end but truck was replaced excercising the lemon law.

Mine is quieter and never made that sound even in -30F weather and cold start

Definately not normal, sounds like my scissor gear when it was off when installing it. Didn't preload the gears.

NOT TRUE - filter has an anti-drainback valve to hold oil within filter when engine is shut down.

Yes you are correct. I forgot about the anti drain back valve. Thank you.

Iirc the 12 and newer tacomas have a shortened piston skirt to in theory help with fuel economy and is supposedly more prone to piston slap than the earlier 1gr-fe engines. If the dealership says it fine, they aren't gonna do anything until it has major problems. My opinion is to get the noise documented at a couple dealerships and have a Toyota dealership do all the oil changes until the warranty is up or something catastrophic happens. Do you have the extended warranty? If so I say drive that sucker.
