Wells State Park in Sturbridge? Nice little area there - did a lot of work there a few years ago when I was at my previous company.

Yeah, that's the one! I like the state campgrounds, they're cheap and usually fairly wooded so you actually have some privacy. I hate the wide open campgrounds that more closely resemble parking lots than the woods.

I loved going to NH camping. I always booked early enough to reserve a river front site.

Yeah I hear ya. Jen and I are going camping in upstate NY this summer at Buttermilk Falls State Park which is pretty cheap and heavily wooded. We went to Niagara Falls last summer and stayed at a KOA across the border and if I never stay at another KOA again, it will be too soon. Looked like someones backyard and the only thing that separated the sites was the fire pit.

The KOA campgrounds are definitely hit or miss. It all depends on who is running the show. We stay at one near Saco Maine frequently and it's pretty nice but some of the more commercialized ones are terrible. Like you said, sites right on top of one another. Before I book at a KOA, I check for reviews and look for pictures online.

We were out that way last year camping, except about 40 - 50 miles north of where you're going. We were in the Adirondack State Park, absolutely beautiful up there!

Gotcha. Not much point in upgrading if you're just going to be trading out of it.

Were going to Naples NY next month and were bringing the camper. No idea about the campground, they don't even have a website. Then going to PA in July but we want to do a few weekends maybe in NH or down the cape.

    You guys that have camped NH might be able to help me out on this one;
My family used to stay at a campground in NH when I was a kid that had a really rocky, fast-moving river by a lot of the campsites. Deep enough for swimming, but you could touch bottom pretty much everywhere. I know that it's in the Jefferson area, because we used to stay there when my parents would take us to Santa's Village. Not sure on a distance, though, since I was probably 10 the last time we went, but it was definitely less than an hour.
I know that the place was predominantly tent sites back in the day, but that may have changed in the past 20 years.
I know it's not much to go on, so I'm not expecting much, haha! I just was struck by the urge to go camping there again the other day. :notsure:

We used to stay at a place like that just south of North Conway. Had a rope swing to jump into the water in the one deep spot. Lot's of people came through on tubes drinking. Great place but I haven't been there since I was a kid.

This day and age, I'd be really, really, really surprised if the rope swing was still active. I'm sure some idiot did something stupid and ruined it for everyone by now.

Yeah, I've been racking my brain trying to remember more details about the campsites/campground, but like I said I was only about 10 last time we went. I didn't pay much attention to details, time & direction traveled, etc back then, haha! All I really remember was the river. We camped a LOT when I was a kid, so the campsites themselves don't stick out in my mind that much, but I distinctly remember how hot Santa's Village would be and how nice it was to get back to camp and jump in the river

Depends. NH isn't as dumb about that stuff as a lot of states are. Maine's the same way; I know that there was a kid that broke both legs doing something stupid on a rope swing in Farmington when I was younger (he climbed the rope and jumped from the bridge it was tied to), and that swing's still there.

That's probably true. I think the name of the place I was thinking of was Saco River Campground

Drinking and floating sounds like the Saco river.

I have no idea what place you're talking about but maybe this might help jog your memory.

Yeah, I spent a while last night scrounging that site, actually. I'm leaning towards Israel River Campground, but I'm not sure. Their photos make the river look both shallower and slower than I remember. :notsure:

I've pretty much settled between either that or Twin River Campground, but can't be sure either way. It's probably Israel River, because Twin River is an extra hour from where we'd have been coming from.

Was the rope swing near or next to a wooden bridge?
