Squeaky Dakars : Any advice from others with the Dakars ?

The two lowest load bearing leaves have them, but not all, the second, third, and the

$77 D29XL Leaf Spring

D29XL AAL (which is an exact duplicate of the 3rd leaf) do not have the silencer pads. I was threatening to drill those.

 

The 2nd gen ones are missing an isolator for the leaf that wraps the front bushing , hence the thread

 

The first gens don't have one there either. Hence, the response.

This shows which ones have the holes, no AAL, just stock.

 

That's really interesting. The first Gen Dakar springs, have one more leaf spring silencer per end of leaf spring.

Compare with the 2nd Gen Dakar springs:

 

Huh. We also have full miltary wrap , which makes it almost impossible to fit any sort of lining between the eye leaf and the next leaf. At least not without a full dismantle

 

aside from difficulty encountered with forum tools, a package of CLK6 prefurbishment service kits arrived. new Dakars nearly ready for install.
I've begun noticing a squeak from the rear of the truck and figure this is anticipatory dakar leaf pack squeak

 

yeh yeh sorry the new regime format and i do not get along well. I'm positive that this problem will continue.

 

The procedure you outlined was not possible in my instance for the drivers side. With the new pack front eye bolt in, the spring pack was resting on the spring perch of axle housing. I could not lower the axle any further without ripping the factory brake lines out. I had no option but to use my trusty Harbor Freight 36 inch alignment pry bar to force the shackle down 2" to get the shackle / frame bolt through the hanger. The pry bar got a workout. Passenger side has no brake lines, so that was super easy all done by hand.

Longer brake lines would have made things easier for sure.

 

Guess I need to install my extended brake lines and flush brake system before doing leafs.

 

well...looking backwards at a few posts trying to get it strait, I find no mention of how easy it is supposed to be to get that leaf pin in the hole. I've had the dakar pack bolted finger tight front and back, and then tried to get the pin to line up with the hole. not gonna happen. just undid the rear shackle bolt, and was able to get the pin in the hole. took a break, and its all come apart. I'm going to try again, get the pin in place put on u-bolts to keep the pesky pin placed, then....try to put the shackle bolt back in.....

 

Do you have axle shims ?

 

Did you try using a ratchet strap around the axle and hooked to the frame to pull the axle forward (or backward).

 

no shims. used factory clamp/plate with extended bolts holding factory bump stop.
I did wrestle all the bolts and pin into place, and placed a new shock. passenger side done.

 

I did not have. Thats a good idea. At one point it looked like a quarter inch forward pull would have located the pin.

 

I did struggle this altogether now. jacking/unjacking/contorting my foot pushing a long punch/hammering the last shackle bolt. the u-bolts did help hold the pin while I jacked the frame up high for the last shackle bolt. driver side to go do.

 

Yeah...I'd consider it a standard tool if going at the leafs solo. I certainly needed it. Learned it from JDMCQ's thread.

Did you garage condition them?
