Making My Version of a Pro Grille

Well after seeing Pubcrawl's Retro Satoshi, I had a thought to do my own grille instead of a purchased one. I original was going to do something similiar to Pubcrawl's, but my own vision came about and I would do my own version of the Pro.

I started by contacting StealthTaco and he hooked me up with some centers that he hd removed. I then cutout the center of a grille that I purchase from a member. I then joint pieces together with the 3M Automix system like Pubcrawl used. I was going to use the large older style FJ "TOYOTA" like other have used, but really wanted one from a newer FJ Cruiser. Luckily I was able to purchase a silver and a black from another member!

So now with the emblem I had to make a backing plate for the emblem to mount, which I ended up using a piece of scrap plastic from the grilles and heated/bent into shape. I then traced the emblem and cut it out, then epoxyed to the grille center.

After a lot of filling, sanding, filling, sanding....then priming and wet sanded. After a couple months of on/off working, I finally came up with something I am pretty happy with.

Only thing left to do is give it a final couple coats of matte black, then it can be installed!!

Dude, I had the idea to do the same thing a while back! I posted in Homer's thread for someone's cutout but never heard back from anyone.

Yeah, I like how it will match the small inserts in the headlights and scoop! Probably around $200 dollars, but that's mainly because I purchased another grill and the shipping for the inserts.

Am I the only person that doesn't like the pro grill? I think it looks like someone chopped a hole in it and then tried to fill it with a toyota logo. I like the OP's version much better than toyota's. I think it looks more finished and well thought out. Nice work.

 

Thanks! I agree! Its a like/dislike for me on the PRO grille, which is why I thought why not try something that actually looks like something that should (I think) have been done. Something just doesn't flow with that grille
