Whistling Noise in Crosswinds At Highway Speed

Sounds good. Hope that's it. Cant wait for road test results. Go out on a windy day and go 80+ MPH both ways then we will know

 

Yup. There is a stretch of road on my way to work that is almost always windy so it shouldn't take long. I did retest both sides with air now that they have somewhat cured and they're good to go.

No problem. My daily drive is frequently windy so I deal with that noise a lot. Annoys the hell outta me.

 

it only gets me about once a month on the four hour trip to my folks place. I often luck out with the wind speed, but when I don't it's a looong trip.

 

For those waiting for some results, I have good news and bad news. The good news is the noise has been drastically reduced, both in loudness and frequency. The bad news is that it did not go away completely. I did only silicone up that front vertical seal in the mirror mount, so I'm just going to seal the whole damn thing and see what happens. Oddly enough it still sounds like its coming through the windows in the spot where I showed in my first post. We shall see.

ETA: I just went out and did some more compressed air testing. I did find some spots on the back side of the mirror mount (closest to the window) and also some up and down the sides of the windshield, although the windshield one was a different sound. I sealed them all anyway. Now we wait again.

 

Does anyone have Ventshades and also have this noise????

 

GotMetal, was the mirror noise you could hear sound like someone blowing into a kazoo or was it more of a whistle noise? You probably already stated the answer in a previous post but I could not find it.

The noise I have is the exact same as the video in post #8. When I blew compressed air into the gap around the mirror mount, it produced the same noise. Sealing around that area has had very good results but it has not completely gone away. I will continue to try and eliminate it completely.

 

GotMetal, do you have any updates concerning the apparent mirror/window noise?

 

I'm sorry I haven't had much time to mess with it recently. I'll be changing my oil this weekend so perhaps I'll do some more testing then. Rest assured when I find something out I will post back here.

 

Alright here's my next attempt at the window issue. I did a lot more compressed air testing and this is what I found.

Right about here on the window, roughly the same for the passenger side too, I could make the sound by blowing air up between the window and outer seal as shown below.


I could push on the window from the inside to make it stop as noted before. If you pull the seal down away from the door, there's a lot empty space up in the door frame so I figured I could stuff something in there to try and make the seal put more pressure on the window. Nothing I tried worked.

I decided to look up inside the seal where the window contacts it when closed, nothing out of the ordinary there but I got the idea to put some tape up in there to see what would happen. After 5 layers of electrical tape in the problem area I could not get it to make the noise anymore.

At this point I'm pretty sure it's from not enough pressure in the door seal being put on the window in certain points to give it a proper seal. The tape might be giving it just enough more "filling" ,for lack of a better word, to make the proper seal. It's worth a shot I guess. Anything is at this point. As always I will report back with my findings after driving on a windy day.

 

I think you are onto something here. That is the exact spot where I push on my window to stop the noise while driving.

 

I've never taken the door panel off to see what is in there. Is there a way to adjust the window height? I don't know if the window stops at a predetermined point or if it stops due to positive feedback from pressure. It the window could be made to go even a fraction of an inch higher, the added pressure on the seal might be enough to make the sound stop. I guess that's essentially what the op is doing with the tape. If the tape fix works, window height might be something to look into. It also may explain why some people have the noise and some don't. Thanks again OP for doing all this experimentation.

 

I'm not the OP, but that's a good idea about adjusting the window, if possible. Unfortunately it hasn't been windy enough here lately to test the tape out. Hopefully it will be this week at some point.

 

Yesterday was pretty windy. Noise is still there, although seems more intermittent. It was enough to stop the noise with compressed air, but not enough for high speed winds. Not sure if this means even more tape will fix it, but how much? 10...20 layers? Seems impractical. Maybe we're on the right track but tape is the wrong material. Maybe something with more substance that is thin enough to go up in the seal but will conform to the window better for a proper seal, like thin rubber or something. Maybe a cut up bicycle tire tube or similar. I will probably do a little tinkering this weekend.

 

My truck had that annoying crosswind whistle, I did the screen door spline trick along the top of the windshield & it worked like a charm. Best $2.00 I've spent in a long time

Good to know. My wife's uncle said he just used some "automotive (silicone) caulk" around the windshield and that did the trick. Seems there are several different sources of this noise but it only happens in strong winds at high speeds. I've only heard it a few times in those conditions. Just gathering info. Good work peeps.

 

What is this screen door spline trick, if you don't mind me asking? Also, is your whistle noise like the one in the video in post #8 or a different one? Thanks.
