Do you have access to another scanner to try, just to make sure it's not that? Or at least verify your scanner operates on another vehicle?

What other electrical symptoms are there? Lights, cranking (no start of course), utter nothingness, etc.?

Any aftermarket electronics like alarms/immobilizers? Factory immobilizer? Ignition switch worn out (janitorial key ring, many miles on vehicle) ?

Load test battery? (not enough info to tell if it's an issue or not, so tossing that in too)

Pre shutdown symptoms/behaviors? Bucking, surging, etc.?

More info will allow better guessing.

I've seen other posts where mechanics had issues talking to the ECU with their scanner. In at least one instance there was a wire loose/pushed back from the connector under the dash.

In these cases it was during an emissions check.

Does the dash light up when you turn on the key?

Thanks all- turns out some one had put a 10A fuse in the slot for the EFI which was supposed to be 20A- I missed it when I was checking fuses- all good now

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
    Good catch.

That was an obscure problem. Good job finding it!

So it was a blown EFI Fuse?
