Replacement Stereo

My 2007 TRD Off-Road has the OEM stereo that came with it. I was wondering if there was a newer unit that would be a direct replacement for what I have. I want to be able to use the same wiring harness, mount, etc. I don't require XM or Serius.

 

There are a ton of options. Outside of a factory stereo, you will need a new face plate though. As far as using factory wiring, there are wiring harnesses that you can buy, that will allow you plug your new unit into the factory wiring without splicing.

 

Contact Crutchfield.com as a starting point. They seem to have the stereos and hardware needed to do this on many vehicles.

 

Will changing the head unit affect the rear camera, or do most aftermarkets adapt to it?

 

Many aftermarket head units have an output for a rear camera, you have to check the product description to be sure. As was mentioned, Crutchfield is a great place to look. I bought my HU elsewhere, but bought my wiring adapter through them. I had a few questions during the install, and they picked up the phone right away, and answered my questions. Not the cheapest place, but great customer support.

 

You will have to do some... creative wiring... to retain your stock backup camera displaying on your stereo. Swapping the unit itself won't affect the backuop camera feed to the rearview, but if you are talking about adding the feed to the new stereo, it can be weird. 99% of all aftermarket stereo headunit have RCA inputs for the backup camera, while the stock backup camera is wired with no RCAs at all. It can be a little weird getting it wired up, but I have done it and it isn't bad at all, just different

I really don't want to change to an aftermarket stereo. I was looking for a current OEM Tacoma stereo that might be considered an "upgrade" to my unit that came with my '07. I don't need a backup camera or satellite radio.

 

If you are going through the trouble of changing head unit then get aftermarket. More options plus you may find some features that you didn't know you would like to have.

 

I think the only upgraded OEM system is the JBL, but it won't be plus and play at all.

 

Honestly there is no point. Upgrade Nope, it will just be for visual and minor extra functions which you already stated you don't care for. I do know of a stock looking replacement that is by no means stock and rivals even the best after market decks, and looks stock

The deck does run on an older platform but its stable and has solid performance.
IT has a built in DSP and a ton of other goodies.

Tacoma you have to use the universal one for now, I guess its practically the same as a double din deck. Sorry about the confusion.
Im hoping that the new version their making( still working out the software bugs on the new os) will have one for the tacoma's. The universal one still requires some Modifications to work with the tacoma and will require a dash kit

Go aftermarket. Dash kit and wiring harness then your done. Plug and play. All completely reversible.

 

How would I be able to tell if I have the JBL system?

 

I had the JBL in my 07 and it sucked. If you are looking to spend any money at all, do yourself a favor and go aftermarket, it will be much better than any OEM replacement. If you have JBL it will say on the head unit and where the speakers are.
