Same block with different stroke, Pistons ? It's the SAME MOTOR. the 4.0 comes in two variations with VVt and Dual vvt. Otherwise, they are the same. This is true for the 3.5. It is based on the industrial standard 3.5. Now, they can call it a truck motor because it may be tuned differently. But, that is the only way they can. That is not to say it is a bad motor. Heck, the 3.5 is outstanding base engine to build upon. It is more economical to start with; which is a big objective for the Tacom. Personally, I would not buy a Taco with a "new" untested motor and the 3.5 will be a great motor for the truck......a small truck, a small life style truck, a small life style truck with a minivan motor.

Why couldn't Toyota change the internals of the 3.5 for truck applications? I've seen GM do this for their engines.

Why is everyone so upset about the new tacoma having a 3.5L engine. Didn't the 1st gen that everyone loved have a 3.4?

Most of the people who are complaining wanted a V8 or the dual VVT version of the 1GF RE in the new Tacoma, which was never going to happen. Both of those motors don't get the fuel economy the new Tacoma needs. Not to mention I doubt even 2 percent of Tacoma buyers would choose a V8 Tacoma.

This is as stupid statement as it can get. If Tacoma owners were about fuel economy the best selling version would be Reg cab with 2.7 and manual, and not Double cab long bed with V6 and auto.. (aka most inefficient in the lineup)
If Toyota offered V8 that would be the engine of choice for every double cab long bed.

That's why they sold so many V8 Colorado's huh? (they sold very few just FYI)

Let's agree to disagree. If people want a V8 they will likely buy a full sized truck.

^ Yup. Don't tell BlueT that. He's pretty sure everyone who drive a Tacoma wants a Diesel and 9,000 lbs tow rating. Who gives a crap about how it rides or what it costs?

Supposedly the auto gets better MPGs than the manual. Also, I can't see the 2.7 getting gas better gas mileage than the 4.0 when it has to work harder to pull the same weight. I suppose if we were in it for the gas mileage, none of us would have 4x4 either.

Were we talking about Colorado ?
We can agree that your statement is false and inaccurate. Simple, sales numbers disprove that Tacoma owners, looked at fuel economy as the only choice to buy vehicle. So if you want to agree that you are wrong than sure we can agree.
Second item (and this one shows lack of education) is to insist that displacement is driving factor behind MPG.
You can stick V8 in present truck and MPG's will not change from V6 in any significant way.
Vehicle weight dictates your city (stop and go) MPG, Vehicle air dynamics will dictate you MPG on Highway. (its called Physics)
With Synthetic oils, aluminum blocks and fuel injection V8 is as efficient as V6 and the difference is in fractions.

People buy the V6 over the four because of the added power and it doesn't use that much more fuel. It's a good trade off. once you load up the truck with a 4 cylinder it's a dog. That's why most people will get the V6.

    A) The Colorado and Tacoma are direct comparables. The Colorado V8 didn't sell well and that can give us an idea of how a V8 Tacoma would sell.
    B) Displacement is a component of fuel economy. Take the same engine and add more mass from a larger displacement, or worse more components, and the engine will be less efficient.
C)Take those features you describe and put them on the V6... less mass in the motor and less total volumetric displacement for the fuel/air reaction... you have better efficiency.

    and most importantly

    D) I said Toyota wasn't going to put a V8 or dual VVT 1GR-FE in the new Tacoma. Both of those motors are wasteful in that truck and will hurt fuel economy to the consumer and the regulators compared to the competition.

Mike Sweers said number one improvement people wanted in next gen Tacoma was.......wait for it....better MPG. So Tacoma owners present and in the future certainly care about good MPG. Also the Auto trans gets better MPG than the manual. Not going to quote who's statements I am disputing but I think we can figure it out. :argue:

Sold my '05 double cab tundra V8 because I hated 14 MPG. Sold my '07 FJ Cruiser because I hated 17 MPG (on a good day). Loved everything else about both of them (selling the FJ really hurt).

Come on Toyota, show us you can beat everyone in fuel economy like do in everything else.

Fuel economy matters to me big time. When I take off on adventures it typically involves several hundred miles of highway driving to a trailhead or onto a trail for typically under 50 miles offroad. Spending less money on gas means feeling like I can go skiing more often or spend more on food or beer.

Any idea if the new engine has a serviceable timing belt or timing chain?
