I leave the trunks about 6' tall and hook my chains to the top and use the leverage against the roots, chop the roots on the back and sides it's ready to pull over...

Cut that shit level with the ground, throw some dirt and grass seed on it... I've done 7 trees in the last year like that... Ain't got no time to be digging out stumps

 

dig and trim roots as you go. although, keep a few to hold it in place until you are ready to take it out. Didn't have to soak the ground here, since it's not super hard. If I had to do it again, I would keep the trunk about 5 or 6' tall to use for leverage like Old School said.

I've done this a few times. Except I went slightly below dirt level. Never knew it was there.
