I had a great time with you guys! :D I wouldn't say I was struggling, just patiently watching, listening, and feeling what the truck was doing.

I've been running a rack doctor rack for the last 6 months and haven't had any issues. Good service and refund turn around, plus the lifetime warranty is nice.

Currently getting shocks ready for new spherical bearings and wanted to tighten down the top cap a lil cause it was leaking a bit. If it's still leaking I'll replace the o-ring.

Any pointers on a good way to tighten that top cap for those who have experience rebuilding your shocks?

    Yea, it won't do anything.

The top cap has nothing to do with holding oil it. It has no seals in it That hold back oil. Just the water seal to clean the shaft

If it's leaking you'll have to replace seals.

Other wise, undo the set screw ontop and then wrap it with leather or a thick rag and use a pipe wrench.

I had to order it. Unless they are close to you, you'll most likely have to order it. But they are prompt. They get it out pretty quick.
I used one can to do two coats. But it does take a day to cure. I sprayed one coat waited an hour or two then sprayed the 2nd. So get two if you have other things to paint. Now with the long travel kit I would PC it but if your trying to keep the price down I would use this stuff and keep doing touch ups when needed. But even if I had black Powder Coat I would still use this stuff for touch ups. It's your call. Good luck

    Stuff and junk and things...

Just rebuild them, you have them off and a seal kit from King will have the o ring that goes under the top cap. You will have to un-thread the body to replace it. Unless your talking about the seal head where the shaft comes out.

www.shockseals.com has great prices on seal kits.

I just talked to Safari LTD, they are not making a rack & pinion any more. They claim it is do to the crappy Toyota design that only last 4-6 months. They now carry Atlantic, suppose to be brand new units for $395 with a 2 year warranty.

Think the Rack Doctor is the current leader.

Phoenix Rack and Axle is $249 with exchange (lifetime warranty). Looking ~$700 if I have them install it. They said it is 4.9 hrs of labor. He said that was better than the FJ which is over 7 hrs of labor because they have to drop the subframe.

Technically they have never gone on yet. Picked them up used off race dezert and getting them ready for when they do go on in a few months. They have been sitting in my garage for a few months and I just noticed that one was oily when I picked it up from laying on the ground for two day. I called king yesterday to get prices for misalignments and bearings and asked about that too and he said just try and tighten it down cause it could just be loose.

So I decided to leave it in the vice upside down like that and see if anything comes out on the rag.

Also noticed that they had no charge in them so ill have to take them to king or another shop anyways. Thanks for the tips though!

hmmm, my rig has been making an awful sound. A loud whine. And it gets louder as I turn the wheels. I haven't noticed any issues with steering, its just a loud whine. I'm thinking its the pump. I did put power steering fluid in for a couple of weeks before I realized I am supposed to use ATF fluid. I wonder if that damaged it??

I got a pic in my build somewhere of what my pulley looked like. Stiff as hell and was black on the back a little...
