talking about noises, every time I flex I hear this popping/creaking noise coming from the middle of the truck. Some fella said it was probably the crossmember not bolted down tight enough. ??

Best guess is they have money to blow or want the creature comforts. Personally I'd go with an 80s single cab yota or 4runner.

True. I just don't see the point. somebody was selling an early 80s yota on here not too long ago. I really would have liked to get that if I had the money.

I was about to take pics but the angles don't look bad so I listened to the noise and its definitely coming from the crossmember right under the driver seat. Gonna have to tighten it up.

You'll spend that much just for a steering axle.

Keep in mind these trucks are too big and too heavy to be on anything smaller than 1-ton axles. Even stock 60s need to be upgraded for them.

If you SAS for under 15k on a second gen you're doing well.

If it's a trail rig they're great. Most people don't want to drive a 30+ year old truck daily, or even regularly for that matter.

For people like us, that have to drive 3-7hrs one way to wheel its even worse. You wanna drive that all that way to wheel?

Let's say you buy the truck for $4k. You're probably gonna need to put some more money into it to make it reliable enough to drive that far, wheel and get home. So that brings the cost up a few more K.

Then you decide it needs bigger tires to be effective
Which means gears. That's $$$. Then lockers, which is $$$, but now you're breaking axles, so those need to be upgraded which is $$$. So on and so forth.

Or you decide to trailer that pile so if it breaks you don't have to worry about it. Now you need a trailer, that's $$$. And a truck to pull said trailer, that's hella $$$$$. Now you have two vehicles to insure, maintain ext that's even more $$$.

Or you say fuck that I'll get a SXS to wheel and pull it with the Taco. That's still trailer money and a good SXS is close to $20k with no mods.

No matter what you do, you end up spending roughly the same amount of money. All that changes is where you spend it and when.

Haha thanks Cap. I guess if I had the money I would by a rig that I wouldn't care getting banged up and would haul that sucker to moab buuuutttt I don't have that kind of money. Money makes things a lil more logical.lol

Neither do I. That's why I'm not in Moab right now.

Every time I sit down and look at all the options I come to the same conclusion. Having 1 vehicle, built right and wheeled within its reasonable capacity is the cheapest way to go.

That means there are some things you'll want to try but can't. And some things you want to do but shouldn't. That means you'll spend more time and money doing things RIGHT than you would if it was dedicated trail rig. But in the end you'll have a better product and one that's with you ALL the time. To me that's important, others don't care.

I'm not spending all this time and money to build a truck and then DD something else. That would piss me off.

I'm not driving 200miles from home and then doing something stupid that might leave me stranded(again).

There is a fine balancing act that must be performed by making sound adult decisions.

That's my take on the subject, but I know others disagree
